i am getting a mim p just because ther is more room to add stuff to it.
but first i am going to mod my squier to hell, then if i am satisfied with it, ill move the changes i like to a mim p. i am thinking jazz near the bridge and a sg/attitude pickup near the neck, along with the p in the middle. sound good guys?

Why bother starting with the Squier? You can't polish a turd. Well, I guess if it's an early 80's Squier it might be worth it, but the modern ones are such low quality that it seems pretty pointless. It sounds like you don't really know what kind of sound you're going for, and unless you have something specific in mind, you're probably just ruining your bass.

I would just do the MIM so you save money. lol. I think the pup idea is really cool. You just have to post soundclips as soon as you get it done.

why waste time. It would be a better idea to think of the reason why you would want to mod an MIM P. After you determine that consider how you will meet your expectations. Consult the mxers for questions and opinions to help you determine how to reach your goals. THen perform the modifications

Well, do what you want. No, you can't polish a turd but it's fun ...

I'm defretting my Squier P-Bass. I just need to get some wood putty, I dunno why I didn't think to get that before.

But eeeverybody here said the same thing, why waste your time with a crappy bass.

Like I'm gonna touch the Schecter.

i know what i am doing techinically, but from a tone point of view, i dont know much. at first i was like, hmm, i could have a p and j bass. then i was like, hey, maybe make something like the Urge II bass, then i thought about the attitude bass. i know i will just be polishing a turd, but once i polish this turd, ill put some of hte polished parts i like onto something better than a turd. i dont want to screw up a good mim, but destroying a squier with a bunch of mods is ok with me.

^^^John makes a version of that preamp called the U-Retro. It has no plate, and the knobs are connected to the board via flat ribbon cables. Its made for just that sort of thing.

agreed...dont bother, and instead put the money toward getting the mim precision you want.

Funny you mention the early squiers, there is a early 80's made in japan squier P-bass at my work...and I must admit it plays nice!

Go for it.If you have the money to buy the fender P and still mod the squier, why not?Even if you mess up the mod,you still have the fender,so it works out.

sorry about the bump, but yeah, i do have the money for both, i have about 700 for the stuff, and i already have the mim p, and i will have my geddy sig in two months. so yeah, the squier is just a test model, and the mim is going to be the main bass along with the geddy.
