First of all is there any other threads like this? I looked didn't find any tho I would think it would be a very popular question.

I have a fender Jazz but its time for something new and I really like the sound of P bass with a pick I didn't really have much time to play with my fingers or just play it much at all cause my girl was rushing me but how do they sound playing fingerstyle latly I have been trying to use a pick for punk stuff but I feel soo much more confortable playing finger style, Anyway with the tone knob adjusted on the p bass is it easy to get a sound similar to a pick useing fingers?

I know I can do it with my jazz cause it has a pickup near the bridge wich picks up higher sound, but if anyone here knows what I mean, is does the tone effect it enough to give you that high sound when useing your finger?

Also any links to other posts that compare J and P basses are helpful. Th

You could get a P/J bass.

P pickup in the neck, J pickup in the bridge... is seems to get all the sounds you talk about.

Precision sounds better with a pick in my opinion, while Jazz sounds better for fingerstyle or slap.

I just really like fender I think they give you the most for the money. And I just don't like anyother basses.

^^I also like fenders, but i doubt that comment was justified, u haven't tried every bass in the world so come on, be a bit more open minded.

agreed, i read somewhere that the precision was made for slap (low lows and high highs, and almost no mid) ..is that true or iam i crazy?

slap is really middy... the precision was made for upright players who needed more precision in the intonation.. and of course more mobile and louder :)

I have always found going to Guitar Center is something best done solitarily, since you are going to be too distracted to need someone's company. And I can spend hours at GC easy.

ugh...dont get me wrong I love the precision, but its slap tone isnt exactly its selling point in my opinion. Too thick and 'tubby' sounding when slapped. Yes I know that "larry graham invented slap, and he played a P-bass." But if you notice, he switched to a Jazz later in his career.

If you asked me...when it comes to slap, Jazz owns the P. You need that crisp trebley tone of the J-bass.
