I have been thinking a lot lately about some new drum heads i'm gonna get. I wanna go for the coated look for my drumset. I heard that a lot of people use clears for their toms, and i heard that smooth white drum heads are about the same. And also, are they more durable like coated drum heads? Or should i just go with the coated drum heads over clears?

Smooth Whites TM are made similar to ebony heads. They're solid white, and aren't coated. So they sit between clear and coated heads sonically.

You should buy drum heads that fit the sound you want, not what they look like.

What kind of drums do you have? What do you plan to do with the drums? Play live? Record? Do you practice and play solo at home?
What kind of sound do you want? Fat or projecting? Alot of natural acoustics or choked down some?

Id suggest the coated amb over clear amb or smooth white amb over clear amb.
That combo can get you any sound your after, don't buy a gimmick head or a thick head where your stuck with one tone thats a waste of money.

no one, its just that for a certain sound, you happen to get the option of a nice finish. really, even if music was about looks(which is deffentally isnt, its an expression of yourself) who is going to see your heads.

That is a stupid thing to say. That comparison has nothing to do with heads. A finish on a drum set doesn't affect the sound of the drum and if it does it is not very noticible. Drum heads are different there is coated the smooth white ebony and clear and such but they give off different sounds if you pick one for its appearance it will affect the sound, whereas if you buy the same kit with a blue wrap, and the same kit with a stain, is the sound difference going to be very noticible?
Just my opinion, don't get mad or anything, but IMO that comparisson does not fit in with this conversation.
