If you don't know who he is you need to put your bass down and donate it to someone who does know who he is.

Anyway,
I'm trying to learn some Iron maiden songs but am having serious problems with keeping up his speed. I can play the actual song but it's at about 3/4 of the real speed.
Are there any tricks people use to play faster?

If anyone answers by saying practice I will personally [Removed for classification purpases].
I do 3 hours practice per day, I can't practice much longer without choosing which subjects not to do homework for.

Get a metronome and just keep on practicing. I still occasionally have trouble keeping up with the really fast triplets in some maiden songs, Harris is a beast.

I always thought he used 2...but middle and ring, rather than index and middle. Maybe im mistaken though, ill wait for one of the steve harris nuts to come in here and set the record straight.

Hmm, I reckon that I read he used three in order to create the galloping effect that many of their songs are supposed to have. But, I don't listen to Iron Maiden, so I have no idea.

Having Steve Harris as someone to look up to is cool, but trying to start off with some Maiden is probably not a great idea. The speed he plays with took him many years to accomplish, he didnt just pick up a bass and start wailing out Aces High. Speed comes slowly with progression, only trick to play faster is patience.

it takes a while to get that speed up on the gallop but do it with three fingers

He Does Not Use 3 Fingers!

Edit: And there not triplets, the "gallop" is an 8th note followed by 2 16th notes.

yeah, if you just started, Iron Maiden is harder. Steve does play pretty fast. I had no trouble keeping up with any Maiden song, but that's because I started listening to them after playing for longer than 2 years. But as probably said above, start playing the songs slower and work your speed up.

which songs were giving you trouble anyways? Maybe you're doing the super fast ones and maybe we can reccomend you some that aren't as fast paced. :thumb:

Left shoe, no need to apologize some Maiden will take a few years of playing if you want to sound anything like the record.Do you think thier faster songs, ex. Aces High should be able to be played within a year?

I would like to see someone playing one-one/half years play Aces High from start to finish:D

Steve Harris does use 3 fingers on some songs, why would he say so in magazine articles if he doesnt?

I can play all of The Trooper from start to finish in time with the live version perfectly fine. I understand that it's not as fast in terms of bpm as Aces High (Aces High is apparently ~250bpm and The Trooper is ~160bpm) but The Trooper has a more constant bassline. I've been playing for just over a year and conquered The Trooper at the 9 month mark.

I've never seen 'Arry use 3 fingers.

I can also play all of Dream of Mirrors fine with 2 fingers (even the fast part that's ~170bpm but seems faster)

And yes, like Jaded said, it's not hard. It can be somewhat tiring at fast tempos if you haven't built up stamina, but it's not "hard"

^123, I actually have never had an Iron Maiden speed problem at all. Yeah, it's faster, but not the fastest stuff out there. Slayer's War Enseble is like 220 bpm, but has 16th notes. Just an example, because the faster Maiden songs are mostly 8th notes if anything (from what i've seen anyways).

I use the back of my finger to do this, I follow through with the first action, hit the string on the way back out and the hit down again. Its really fast but not perfect because the tone is different on the second hit, so its just a shortcut really. I recommend playing prowler first, its a bit slower than the normal maiden song and you can use pulloffs for the bridge.

I don't think it's impossible to play aces high within a year, if you've just used one-finger-per-fret technique and played with two fingers from the very beginning...

Personally i think the hardest parts are the

G|-5-4-------------
D|-----7-5-7-5-4-0-

in the pre-chorus, and the bridge (IMO).

For whoever has said, Steve Harris NEVER uses three fingers, just two. Some good Maiden songs to start learning would be Phantom of the opera and Rime of the ancient mariner, both awesome songs that will help you build up speed and strength in your fingers.

steve harris uses as much as up to 4 fingers.. Even though you're fast, I think it's pretty impossible to play the 16 (or is it 32) in "Run to the Hills" with 2 fingers..
And to say something about learning "Aces high" within a year.. I think it's possible. Think it took me maybe 2 months more than a year.. but I pulled it off..

I recommend to start using 3 fingers (Started about 6 months ago myself). It can really speed things up and it makes it easier with some slower things too..

give him a break, he said he can't stand the band. How about instead of being immature and saying "Oh God, shut up." you could have quite easily said "everyone is entitled to an opinion". What's worse, you then fuel an arguement by saying they are the best metal band on the planet. So what exactly were you trying to accomplish. I think I may have to agree, the Intro to that is pretty fast, and the bass solo in the middle is fast as well.

Other than that, pretty much the first 2 albums IMO are the fastest, along with Run to the Hills, the bass line to that is pretty fast.

For the record, I could play Slayer's "Raining Blood" with 2 fingers at about 2 months into playing. 16th notes at ~180bpm for most of the song. Like somebody else said and I reiterated, playing at high speed isn't "hard," it just takes some practice for stamina.

You are all too concerned with Iron Maiden rather than helping. Take your time, I couldnt play any iron maiden song when I started, but I can play them fine, hell, try rooting the guitar part for angel of death if you want something "hard" but working yourself up to Harris standard means you've set a great goal, just one that will take a great deal of time and effort.

I'm getting good.

I diddn't start with Maiden either.

I can play virtualy every song by those bands but am only just starting maiden.

One thing that anoys me about you guys is that you assume i'm a noob at bass and give me stupid advice like learn scales.
My bass teacher has gone through the Conservitorium, I've started my AMEB's in Jazz and I am likely to study at the Con.

I know all the basics about speed and practice.
I was asking if there were any techniques I could use to make myself better at playing Iron Maiden, such as changing frets, detuning 3 fingers etc.
Not all this rubbish about practice, I do 3 hours a night.

i'm sorry but your record is false, there is no way you can play that song with two fingers, the sixteenth note part is ridiculously fast i can do it with three fingers or a pick but two without pulloffs is way to fast, and the sixteenth note section is played around 214 bpm

I love Maiden and have only started getting into them in the last few months (slow starter i guess).

Don't think too much of newer fans believing steve uses 3/4 fingers, its not hard to see why they would think that considering his use of triplets and the way he positions his ring finger.

But regardless of whether he uses two fingers, i personally have found it easier to play Maiden songs using three fingers.

Just learn the technique, its really useful

I know all the basics about speed and practice.
I was asking if there were any techniques I could use to make myself better at playing Iron Maiden, such as changing frets, detuning 3 fingers etc.
Not all this rubbish about practice, I do 3 hours a night.
Then how is learning Maiden songs so hard? It isn't rocket science, just practice. As it has been stated, Harris plays with only one technique, and that is all you will need as well.

wtf?

Anyways, to play Maiden you'll want stamina

I mainly like to learn Maiden songs to improve stamina--he does play pretty fast, and it's constant, so there are almost no breaks.

I couldn't play "Run to the Hills" or "Wickerman" when I first started playing, but I memorized the notes, and just kept practicing them.

And practicing them.

And practicing them.

Now, I can. It just takes a bit of time to get that speed built up--good luck!

1 - not every bassist in the world is a maiden fan.

2 - practice. :thumb: but concentrate on finger strenth and stamina.... play to a metrenome to keep in time and just keep going till you have to stop, then play it faster, and faster, etc. And finger strength is really important if your struggling.... you might need some excercises other than playing bass (grip master kinda thing, if you are willing to buy one... otherwise use a tennis ball something like that and squeeze it with your fingers, etc, etc)

i think most of you need to stop being so big headed. Seriously big deal, Harris is a great bassist just dont go fussing that you learnt all his lines in such short time. It gets a bit annoying after the 50 th post :thumb:

one tip to play faster is to play closer to the bridge.

fatwreckpunk

i find that playing about midway between bridge and neck is where i can play faster

i'm sorry but your record is false, there is no way you can play that song with two fingers, the sixteenth note part is ridiculously fast i can do it with three fingers or a pick but two without pulloffs is way to fast, and the sixteenth note section is played around 214 bpm

I'm sorry, but you're wrong. I keep up with the song perfectly fine with two fingers.

The only part I have a little trouble with is around 1:10 in, that part is annoying to keep up with.

if you play every sixteenth note in the E-5320-6430, without pulloffs i would love a recording

For all those who say he only uses 2 fingers I have one thing to say to you all. Don't put money on that statement, you'll lose! And don't be calling others who say he uses more than 2 idiots, because I have proof he uses more than 2.

I have video's where he IS using 3 fingers. Plus, I've seen them in concert from the front row about 4 or 5 times, and have actually seen him use 3 and 4 fingers. Also, in an interview I read, he himself says that he uses 2, 3, and sometimes 4 fingers to pluck the strings.

Yes I back JP, somewhere in my room I have a Bass guitar mag where he is talking about this 3 finger plucking. When I find it I will post the issue and name.

What a load of bull****. Harris was only playing for Ten Months before his first gig, and about 18monts before his first Maiden Gig. I can play alot of his songs and I've only been playnig a year. If you practise hard enough you can do it, if you set yourself heights and want to acheive em, you learn alot faster.
Thats how I did it, the blisters were worth it.

18 months is many years, yes ,no maybe?? Ok 18 months is maybe several years or a few years Fender Bender? You like that better?

i was simply trying to tell the threadstarter to not use Steve Harris as a gauge, he plays incredibly fast and some of his songs are not ideal for begginers and the threadstarter should not be down on himself if he can't play certain songs.

Jesus F***** Christ

I am just trying to give the threadstarter some words of motivation and some of you take a few words and have a f***** cow.

Good for you Fender Bender if you can play some Maiden after a year, want some balloons?

use 3 fingers. if your practicing 3 hours a night and you still cant play harris speed mabie you need to change how you practice. i sugest metranome excercises (check the ones in the lessons section)

I can play at allmost full speed with 2 fingers and am learning to do it with 3.
I'm getting good.

I diddn't start with Maiden either.
I started on deep purple, moved to AC/DC, then GN'R, then Queen, then the Who, now i'm doing Maiden.

I can play virtualy every song by those bands but am only just starting maiden.

Tab out Some Day One Day then please :p

the only thing by harris that still leaves me lost for maintaining speed is children of the damned, i can play fast enough but its keeping up that riff with its odd variations for around 3 minutes that kills me
my favouritre thing to play at the moment is valley of the damned by dragonforce - try that for a speed test :)

STFU!!!! u expect anybody to value your opinion when u are dumb enough to go into a thread about a member of their band and then say the whole band is a joke? nobody will respect what u have to say then.

Harris is a fantastic player, and I especially dig his tone (correct me if I'm wrong, but I've heard he runs through a guitar amp, with flatwounds?).

But many of his lines aren't really that hard...just fast.

A useful tool for building stamina is called the "Gripmaster". It comes with an exercise list as well.

Very useful for building your finger strength. Check them out.

I swear, metal is the only genre that causes massive arguments like this.

He runs his '70 Precision through a Trace Elliot GP12 preamp, powered by Carver power amps through modified Marshall 4x12"s.

I know that he uses 3 fingers, but that's about all I can tell you.

He only uses two fingers it just look like he uses 3 because when he brings his second one down the third one looks like it hits the string.

Did you read my post? You're dead wrong!!! He actually said in an interview I read that he alternates between 2, 3, and 4 depending on what the song calls for.

Besides, as stated in my post, I saw them live from the front row on several ocasions and witnessed him using 3 and 4 fingers. Yes, I actually saw the fingers pluck the string.

Sorry to Bump this old thing, but i remember from the "classic Albums: Number of the beast" DVD that Steve Was asked about how many fingers he used, and he started talking about that he use 2 but people seem to believe that he use 3, so as he said "I guess i do kind of an illusion there :) hehehe"

But never 4...
