Lately I have been getting into a lot of Avant-Garde Metal, and I would like to talk about it more, so I made this thread.
Avant-Garde metal seems to have been exploding lately. Age of Silence, Solefald, Subterranean Masquerade, and Arcturus have all released albums/EPs within the last few months. I would have to say that the Subterranean Masquerade release "Suspended Animation Dreams" has been the best one I have heard out of the recent releases, though the Age of Silence EP "Complications: Trilogy of Intricacy" has the best lyrics(Shopping \m/).
As for the future, I am looking forward to the next full length Age of Silence album, and Solefald - Black for Death : An Icelandic Odyssey part 2.
So yeah, discuss Avant-Garde Metal.

I love avant garde so much, I wish I had money because I feel bad downloading it all (most of it is somewhat attainable). I haven't heard Age of Silence or Subterrainean Masquerade, though. I'd like to.

I heard about this style of music recently, sounds pretty decent so far from what I have heard considering im not a huge metal fan.

My favorite genre as of late. I'd have to say that my favorite avant garde album is The Sham Mirrors by Arcturus. They're also one of my current favorite bands.
Do you know when AoS's next album is due out?

Oops, Gordian Knot aren't exaclty avant-garde, but MIthras and Gorguts are both Avant-Garde death metal. Especially Gorgut's last album. Have you even heard them?

Gordian Knot are just kind of insturmental prog metal. Avant Garde has a very distinct sound...I think the word "wierd" would fit it perfectly.

Just because they're a bit odd and dissonant doesn't make them avant garde. I admit, I haven't heard a lot of Mithras (only a couple songs, although they are frequently compared to Morbid Angel), but there's no way Gorguts is avant garde. At least Obscura anyways (the only one I have to judge by).

my fave ones are Arcturus, and Lux Occulta i guess....
Someone said Unexpect, and they seem less avant-guarde than the others , but who cares, they kick *** anyway!
and someone also said Gorguts, who kick major ***, except i dont see whats so avant-guarde about them, except if we go back in the day maybe...? anywho, they are a kick *** tech death band! quite dissonant at some parts, without sounding annoying like DEP or Ion Dissonance
Dr. Jake Destructo

I wouldn't go as far as to say DEP sound annoying. It's all about finding the beauty beneath the chaos.

If you guys enjoy Avantgarde Metal then I suggest that you check out "Thy Catafalque," they are a Hungarian based metal band that recorded an 8 song self-released album that was only limited to around 15 copies. However, in a bid to get signed, they officially posted their album on a Hungarian site. However, I would exercise caution in downloading it as I only heard that it was official from various people, as I do not speak Hungarian. Definitely worth a listen to any fan. Scroll down to "T" listing and download the links numbered 1 through 8. http://www.shockmagazin.hu/english/download/download.htm

Hahahaa.... love for Carnival in Coal. I was hanging out with my friends andthey all of a sudden mentioned Yes! We Have No Bananas and I was amazed they knew who Carnival In Coal was. Then they said they got the song from me.
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum
Also, I say Obscura is avant-garde. The riffing style relies so heavily on noises rather than notes that the fact that it then comes full circle to melody again is shocking. Mithras though, I say no. They justy have long drone tracks between songs.

It's not so much a genre, really. Avant garde as a phrase means something along the lines of pushing boundaries, being before it's time, that general area of cliches. As music, avant garde can be pretty much anything. In fact that's more or less the point of it.

All I have to say about avant garde is:
Age of Silence
Winds
Ulver
Subterranean Masquerade
Frantic Bleep
Arcturus
Peccatum (old was Goth Metal, new is Avantgarde)
I have to say that Frantic Bleep is ridiculously awesome, the drumming almost always sounds out of place, yet it always fits perfectly.
EDIT: Would you consider Ark to be avantgarde?
Bartender
11-21-2005, 07:59 AM
I'm not sure if I'd call Ulver avant garde. They've made a few black metal albums, an acousticy folk album, and a couple of electronic-ish albums. If it was all thrown together you could tag it as avant garde, but as it is they just seem a rather adaptable group.

I think their electronica material could be considered avant garde though... it's just weird enough, but meh, I could be wrong.
Also, still wondering, would Ark be avant garde, or just really weird prog?
I'm getting more and more into Avant Garde specially into Age of Silence and Solefald both such amazing bands.

For the most part I'd agree, but there's just something about Blood Inside that strikes me as avante-garde, I dont really know what it is. Either way, Ulver are amazing.

I wasn't aware that anybody knew me that well:p
Nah, I listen to plenty of grind, avant garde, and prog (and they're all similar to noise in one way or another)....it's just that I know when to draw a line. Next time I want to fall asleep to random static noises, I'll just unplug my television cable.
And for the record, I'm sure there's plenty of classic rock fanboys that dislike noise more than me.
