Well I'm studying music performance at the moment. In my course, most of the people who play instruments and don't sing are metal fans. BIG metal fans. I'm not a metal fan but I respect it as another genre of music but the guys that live for it see it as the be-all and end-all of music. Now I play bass very gently and use Fast Fret and I get teased by the metal bassists for "playing like a fag" {in good nature though}.

Anyway, I was playing a funk line and one of the metal boys tells me to "metal up that bass". I asked him to show me what he meant and I handed him my Fender Jazz. He proceeded to play so hard that that strings rang off the bass and all I heard was what sounded like a poor slap line that was finger-picked. My poor bass .

Anyway. My point is that metal is not something that young musicians should get too into too much. I don't swear to any genre as I keep an open mind. My playing style is neat and clear, many of the metal bassists I know play hard and fast and can only play like that, even if they shouldn't. They also see theory as being a waste of time. I can read and write music and know a lot of theory, I get called a nerd {once again, in good nature}. Anyone agree with me??

They can get into metal as much as they want if that's all they want to play...

Yeah but why would anyone only want to play one genre, I listen to all music and love it. That's part of being a musician.

Why'd you say that??

It's not part of being a metalhead. :p

I actually somewhat agree with you. I think only playing metal and nothing else is narrow minded. Also, playing hard I think is one of the worst things to do on bass.

I am a metal bassist, but I started doing jazz for High School. I mean, yeah it's good to be into metal and all, but listening to and playing other styles (funk, jazz, classic rock, etc.) is better and gives you a broader view of music and playing styles. Just my 2 cents. :thumb:

musician or not, people might only like one genre. natural born instinct. ur friends, the big metal fans, are an example of that. you might think its noise like a bad salp tone but finger-picked, while they think that tone is kick-***. personal prefrence.:thumb:

you dont know metal then, sorry, but most metal is very theory based, look at lamb of god, dream theatre, led zeppelin(in a sense). n e ways, thats a huge generalization and i completely dissagree with you

Yeah that's cool but I think they fail to realise that metal is actually very complex music. To play it {play it well that is} you really have to know what you are doing with your instrument.

I know, but I don't think that they do. They are in for a shock though. Some of them are good musicians but alot of them arn't.

i think they do realize that, metal bands, good ones practise more than you would with a jazz band, metal bands the ones who make it, practise their music so that it is tight and precise. all the harmonies work as well as solos, they practise for upwards of eight hours a day or so i have learned with reading many bands bios

of course, in ur first statement you accidently generalized the entire genre of metal and did not specify the metal sub-genre that ur friends are into, obviously prog-metal such as John Myung lines (he's in Dream Theater) are extremely complex. just watch what you say, ive noticed that any type of generalization that is posted usually gets flamed like crazy.

at any rate, i have yet to meet a "metal head" who plays their bass sooo hard that there is no tone to it and just metal clacking, i have even failed to see these bassists, at live shows or what have you and i have seen quite a few bands perform
