dont lift it all the way - it's not a pulloff. just lift it a little, so it is still in contact with the string but mutes the sound. once the sound is dead you can do whatever you want with the finger.

well the problem is, i have to move that finger to play another note 2 strings lower, so i'm trying to move it there quickly so i can perform the sweep

Try getting one of those thick elastic bands and putting it on the fretboard, close to the nut. The band will stop the strings from ringing when you lift your finger off, and when your playing some open strings or whatever just slide the band up, so its past the nut.
get the bose distortion ds 1

lol. why would that help?
If i were you i'd try to do without the elastic band for now unless your really struggling.
You have to start slow unfortunately. sounds like your jumping too fast to the next string. do it REALLY slow to get the technique right them speed it up when you'r comfortable.
I find it helps to use my right hand to mute the notes immediately after playing them. Not sure if that's a good technique to get into though.....

Are you referring to a capo or a rubber band? Don't get a tool to replace sloppy technique. Like Spock said, you just need to slow down your practicing and concentrate on muting with both hands.
A Ds-1 huh?
Geez.

I've seen examples of the "rubber band" thing - I think it's rather cheesy - and a cheap substitute for developing real skill.
Although, I've seen Victor Wooten use something like that when he does his tapping. He has a girly "scrunchy" around his headstock, and slides it down over the first fret to dampen any open strings from ringing.
Victor Wooten is one of the best bass players in the world - and I can't justifiably dog on him for using a scrunchy.
If he was just your average dork, then I would probably laugh at him.
Oh, there is also a manufactured string dampener you can purchase. I noticed the thrasher geek "Michaelangelo" uses them on his 4-neck x-shaped guitar. Looks kinda like an x-wing fighter. Well, anyway, it's mounted on the headstock, and extends what looks like a rectangular piece of felt lightly across the first fret. That way he can use two hands and tap on separate necks without open strings clanging around. I still think he's a wanker.
Steve Vai can do the double tapping technique on 2 necks without string dampeners. He uses skill, not cheats. You can take the easy way out - or slow way down and weed out all your mistakes until you have a crystal clear sound - then speed up.
But simple sweeps? Come on - you don't need dampeners. I can almost justify someone using it for extreme tapping tricks, but basic sweep picking requires old fashioned practice to clean it up.
I'd much rather hear slow & clean than fast & sloppy any day.
