well as a few of you know i'm searching for a certain kind of distortion tone cuz i play in a hardcore metal band (drop c tuning) and i like a nice distorted tone. one suggestion was a big muff pedal along with a loooper. i may end up going that route but i'm wondering if guitar distortion pedals would do the trick? i was thinking of maybe a boss overdrive pedal and a boss distortion pedal or something along those lines. i think i've seen a few pictures of people who use these pedals with their basses and i'm wondering how they sound? can you get a nice fuzzy tone out of them?
edit: now that i've looked at models, perhaps the boss sd-1 super overdrive and a boss ds-1 distortion..i'd probably also consider a noise suppressor and/or compression sustainer.

You can use guitar distortion pedals with a bass. Just be careful, you can lose some of your low end with them.

One time at practice I played my bass through a big muff, a Boss DS 1 and an OS 2. It's what I imagine Satan to sound like.

well, i dont listen to any metal really so i dont know exactly what sound you're going for, but if you want that overly distorted sound, like i imagine, check out the pd7.

i have a big muff and a ds-1 and if you're careful with your settings then they sound pretty great. you have to keep the tone on the ds-i pretty low or you get a trebley hiss. the prob with loss of low end doesn't seem to occur with me but ma peavey bxp does have active eq so i can just boost the bass a bit

I have a Boss DS-2 turbo distortion. It's pretty. I tried a few pedals and that was the one I liked.

were all three on at once??? That'd be a sick sound. I've done similar with my amp's built in and the Boss Bass overdrive, sounds very satanic.
I need a guitar distoriton pedal, and I need to try a bunch of them out at guitar center sometime.
Has anybody ever tried one of those metal distortions (like the Metal Zone or the Line 6 Uber Metal) on a bass before. I'd like to hear how that sounds.

I had a boss one for a while, it worked nicely enough. And it was built like a tank.
My friends big muff, DS-1, and some other random distortion, and my ME50B, with the gain all the way up.
i need to try this, NOW.

Meh i still can't get the tone i'm looking for. i went to gc today and played through a us big muff, russian big muff, boss bass overdrive, and an aphex bass xciter. the big muff's weren't bad but it's too much distortion (at any level) and the overdrive was a bit closer to what i want but it's still too much. the xciter was actually very nice as far as giving the tone a little more "edge" and boost. it's very hard to explain the tone i want because theres not too many bands out there i've heard with a bassist who has it. i guess it's kinda in between a justin chancellor and ryan martinie tone. i dont want my bass to sound like a guitar. i'm looking for a growly and somewhat "dirty" tone. i'm starting to think i should've kept my old 'vette but i love my schecter. i'm also starting to think that pedals are not the way to go to achieve this tone. i'm thinking i'll need either an all tube head or a power amp with a very nice pre-amp, which of course i can't afford at the moment.
When i play through my russian Big Muff to get a tone i like i usually have my sustain all the way up and my tone all the way down. Only prob is that is gets massive amounts of feedback
