Ok, I posted this in the guitar forum and since I'm not getting any intelligent feedback there (with few exception), I was hoping I would try my luck here...so here is my question. I've been trying to write some harmonized riffs and I'm trying to break the stagnant trend of harmonizing in thirds, fourths, and using octaves. Is there anything else I can use to harmonize with (barring extensions of course)? Any intelligent suggestions would be appreciated

Use major and minor scales. For example if you start on C, the major scale is C D E F G A B C. You can use the major 1st, 4th and 5th (C, F and G) like normal, and just throw in some of the other chords in between like D and A. Otherwise, just put some chords together, and if it sounds good, use it, if it doesn't, try again, trial and error.

Counterpoint is an extremely difficult technique to explain. Especially over the internet. I suggest you consult a very good book or a very good teacher.

Try using thirds an octave lower. Switch between harmonizing thirds and thirds an octave lower. This is also known as playing in sixths. Try harmonizing in fifths too.
