View Full Version : Top 100 Rock/Metal Vocalists: Round 1, Poll D
YDload
11-19-2005, 02:20 AM
The fourth poll in the first round is now up! That means if you ask where your favorite vocalist is in this very poll, then you are an idiot.
Maynard James Keenan (Tool/APC):
Maynard James Keenan is one of the most revered rock singers of the 90s. He started out with the band Tool, whose style of progressive hard rock outlasted the grunge movement from which it first appeared. With each new album, Maynard refined his vocals in Tool, morphing his throaty howl into an ethreal, haunting tone by the release of Lateralus. He can hold a note for upwards of twenty-five seconds, a feat matched by very few other singers, and his distinctive voice has spawned a legion of imitations (anyone remember Earshot?). Along with his other band A Perfect Circle, Maynard has made his presence in rock music felt in a huge way.
"Something kind of sad about/the way that things have come to be. Desensitized to everything/what became of subtlety?" -Stinkfist
"To ascend you must die/you must be crucified/for our sins and our lies/good-byyyyyyyyyyyy (hold for 20 more seconds)" -Eulogy
"This body holding me reminds me of my own mortality/embrace this moment remember/we are eternal all this pain is an illusion." -Parabola
Serj Tankian (System of a Down):
This nu-metal (if you can even call him that) singer brings a unique touch of his Armenian heritage and Mid-East upbringing to the world of hard rock. Even though he is heavily influenced by Mike Patton, there is still no mistaking Serj's voice whenever it croons, barks, or screams at you from your stereo or radio station (oh yeah, they've been on a lot since the recent album release!). Although guitarist Daron Malakian seems to take over more and more vocal duties with each passing album, it is Serj who is still the superior talent. His harmonies with Malakian are also fantastic, and sometimes they're the only thing that makes the guitarist's voice bearable. Hang tight Serj, you've got a great voice and Daron should stick more to the background!
"People are always chasing me down trying to push my face to the ground when all they really wanna do is suck out my mother****ing brains... my BOOOOOOO!" -Sugar
"The ships are multiplying day after day sir and they're coming close to the shore sir shore sir. We need to evacuate the lightpost it's all over. WHOAAAAA-ver!" -Suggestions
"Swimming through the void we hear the word, we lose ourselves but we find it a-a-aaallllll." -Aerials
"Do you want me to try/directing your night/want me to try/directing your night." -Highway Song
Phil Anselmo (Pantera):
Phil Anselmo pretty much set the stage for the type of vocals you hear from the New Wave of American Heavy Metal bands. Which really sucks, because most of those guys are absolutely terrible and are indistinguishable from one another. Anselmo, on the other hand, always had a few tricks up his sleeve (see "Cemetery Gates"), but by the end of Pantera's reign and subsequent foray into other bands, he was just as unbearable as the rest of them. He could really use another outstanding guitarist to distract us all from his voice, but I guess that's just not going to happen...
Ian Gillian (Deep Purple): (thanks Obi Wan Kenodi!)
It takes an amazing singer to be able to not only hold your own, but shine, in a band with members of the likes of Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord, and Ian Pace. Gillian, though manages to do so quite well. He joined Deep Purple after the bands third release in 1969, and would go on to be a crucial part of some of the greatest hard rock ever recorded. He is known for both his increadable range and huge power.
I'm not a winey, I'm a puttin' on a show/AHHHHHHHHHHHH no no no -Bloodsucker
You better close your eyes/Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh ohhhhhhhhh bow your head/Wait for the ricochet -Child In Time
Maaaaaaagic woman wreckin' up my soul/Things you tell me have never been told -Fireball
King Diamond (Mercyful Fate/solo):
Needs a bio!
Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots): (thanks Spat Out Plath!)
Scott Weiland is the current lead singer with hard rock supergroup Velvet Revolver, but he made his name with grunge also-rans Stone Temple Pilots in the early 90s. Weiland, and the band as a whole, was unfairly characterised as a Pearl Jam imitator, due to the close resemblance of their hit "Plush" to the dreary ballads PJ thrived upon and Weiland's not-too-subtle Eddie Vedder impersonation. In truth, Weiland's influences were based firmly in the classic rock/glam rock tradition - he looked up to David Bowie and Steven Tyler for inspiration musically and image-wise. Despite the criticism, the band managed to record six albums, between Scott's drug dependancy and prison terms, before disbanding in 2003. Weiland almost immediately joined with 3 ex-members of Guns N' Roses to form Velvet Revolver, a band far more becoming of his fast-paced, hard rock style. VR are currently recording their second album, due for release in Summer 2006.
"Breathing is the hardest thing to do/With all I've said/And all that's dead for you/You lied - goodbye." - Interstate Love Song
"Well I'm half the man I used to be/And this I feel as the dawn it fades to grey" - Creep
"Somebody raped my tapeworm abortion/Come on mother****ers and deliver the cow."
Jens Kidman (Meshuggah):
I don't know, needs a bio!
Angela Gassow (Arch Enemy):
Needs a bio!
Sebastian Bach (Skid Row): (thanks Spat Out Plath!)
With the help of Bon Jovi (the former band of guitarist Snake), Skid Row were catapulted on to the glam metal scene of the late 80s, the ideal type of band to capitalise on the recent commercial success of Guns N' Roses. They released two massive albums, 1989's Skid Row and 1991's Slave To The Grind, which raised the bar for all heavy metal bands, combining thrash and speed metal with the dominant pop-metal formula. They were fronted by a charismatic, rake-thin New Jersey native named Sebastian Bach, who modelled his vocal style on fellow New Jersey dweller, Jon Bon Jovi. But Skid Row were no Bon Jovi; they were capable of topping the charts with the sweetest of ballads ("I Remember You", "18 & Life"), but Skid Row were a dirty, sleazy, chauvanist, criminalising, drug-addled heavy metal sex machine. Bach was their poster-boy, constantly making headlines with his often wild, always stupid actions (he once wore a t-shirt to a tv interview which read "AIDS Kills Fags Dead") and the band's attitude was represented in their music through songs like "Youth Gone Wild" and "Monkey Business". Like all glam bands, Skid Row's profile decreased dramatically after grunge took over the music scene and Bach was fired from the band in 1996, following the commercial failure of the band's third album, Subhuman Race the previous year.
"They call us problem child/We spend out lives on trial/We walk an endless mile/We are the youth gone wild!" - Youth Gone Wild
"Bang Bang Shoot 'em up/The party never ends/You can't think of dying/When the bottle's your best friend" - 18 & Life
"I won't be the one left behind/Can't be king of the world/If you're a slave to the grind." - Slave To The Grind
Paul Di'Anno (Iron Maiden):
Di'Anno is the vocalist who appears on the first two Iron Maiden albums: their self-titled and Killers. He was kicked out of the band after that for being an unreliable jerk with substance abuse problems, and thus the legendary Dickinson era was born. Now, I have no doubt that Maiden is better off with Bruce, but that's not to say that Di'Anno's vocal talents were bad at all. On their first album, he was relatively unimpressive: his rough style fit street anthems like "Running Free" and "Sanctuary" perfectly, but he stumbled on softer songs like "Remember Tomorrow." Then on Killers, it was like Di'Anno was a whole new person. I consider this to be Maiden's finest album of their first five releases, and Paul's remarkable improvement has a lot to do with it. He was capable of Halford-like screams while retaining his fierce attitude, and it really makes him more enjoyable. But Maiden was right to get rid of him, since they could have used fewer comparisons to Judas Priest.
"You haunt me you taunt me you torture me back at your lair!" -Phantom of the Opera
"Scream for mercy, he laughs as he's watching you bleed. Killer behind you, his bloodlust defies all his needs... ooh look out I'm coming for you!" -Killers
"Through the darkness I'll be le-e-e-eEAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH-d/ Oh another time another place, oh well another smile on another face. When you see me floating up beside you, you get the feeling that all my love's inside of you." -Purgatory
"Cause I'm a drifter, drift a-law-ooh-aw-ooh-awwwng...yeaaaaaaah!" -Drifter
Ooh this is a fiery poll we've got now! I tried to organize the polls so I would have a clear idea who I would be choosing in each one, but this poll proves that it was impossible to do while still being impartial. So now you've got a fair poll and I have to wrack my brain against Keenan (who won't need it but I still like to vote my conscience), Tankian, and Di'Anno. Have fun!

Jens Kidman Meshuggah
Among the swarms of bands that are part of the heavy metal scene today, none has the amazing blend of odd strumming patterns, time signatures that seem impossible and heavy, fast tempos to accompany like Meshuggah. What else is needed in this picture? A vocalist so crude, so intense and so powerful, that he's just an enhancement of the music more than just an extra accesory. That's where Kidman comes to the stage, making full use of harsh, amazing brutal vocals to make the music even harder. The band started sometime around 1987 in Umea, Sweden. The band claims there's probably nothing better to do there, so why not dedicate free time to music?
Ever since then, Meshuggah has been growing strong both as a band, and as a group in numerous aspects, including the notorious development of lyrical content, but of course, Musically expanding and adding the brutal power that has made of these band the behemoth of heavy Metal they've become today.

I - to cleanse, to purge, to breath eternity and smother all life I
That line is absolutely awesome. Though I think Kidman's vocals blow, he writes decent lyrics.
And I second the guy who said King Diamond. He wipes the floor with everyone here, easily. Though, even while knowing he's superior above the rest, I'll probably put my vote in for MJK like a true fan...

That was a really tough one. I went for Anselmo in the end, he is possibly the best metal vocalist ever IMO. Gillan was a close second, incredible singer, especially on Child In Time.
I didn't need to worry about voting for MJK, he'll make it through easily.

King Diamond (Mercyful Fate, King Diamond)
Many will know King Diamond as the devil loving, face painted, madman during his first stint in Mercyful Fate. He's also quite the songwriter and singer. Going back and forth from ear-piercing screams to low growls is the King's trademark, also always doing his own backing vocals*, adding a personal and much of the time, eerie undertone to the songs of choice. He's also known for the concept albums during his solo career. Most famously was probably the story of Abigail, a stillborn child that comes to life and haunts a young married couple. Whichever era of the King you prefer, there's no denying his vocal power and song writing abilities.
"Come, come to the Sabbath, Down by the ruined bridge, witches and demons are coming, just follow the magic call" - Come To The Sabbath
"So we made the deal under the starry night and "AMON" belongs to "THEM" now... I feel the dawn coming my way" - Sleepless Nights
"I was made a mercenary, In the legions of hell... Now I'm king of pain, I'm INSAAAAAANE!" - Evil
*Barring The Puppet Master. Even then he had a haunting duet with Livia Zita on So Sad.

Diamond for President.
Anyway:
KING DIAMOND(born Kim Bendix Petersen ) was a member of an unknown band called Black Rose, then in 1980 he formed Mercyful Fate, wich is the one of the most influential bands in Black Metal, then in 1985 he destroyed MF and formed King Diamond(the band), wich is basically one of the greatest horror concept bands.
Diamond himself is has a very talented and peculiar voice, having a wide octave range, besides he has the ability to change his vocal from low to high.
Diamond is not all that with vocals, he is one of the greatest frontmen of all time participating in both of his remaining bands since 1992 when he reunited with MF, and he also writes bands music and lyrics.
Good Lyrics and a variety of range with every verse.

Dammit, very difficult
Maynard is truly awesome. I love his vocal control and voice
Serj has an amazing vocal tone and is ALWAYS interesting to listen to.
Anselmo is spectacular at both clean and harsh vocals.
Gillian is a criminally underrated singer with loads of power. Child in Time is
a vocal musicgasm
King Diamond deserves a lot of recognition too.
Maiden's my fav metal band and Dickinson owns the world, but Di'Anno doesn't deserve my vote. He is a good singer however. Love his work on Killers. Ended up voting Serj in the end. I know he won't get as many votes as he should because of the "nu-metal stigma" around him.

King Diamond tempts me due to all of his solo career, as well as his high points in Mercyful Fate.

Well he isn't really that great of a vocalist is he?.. I mean, he's perfect for Meshuggah, but other than that he seems pretty one dimensional

true, but his vocals just fit the music very well, and I am a bit of a Meshuggah fanboy .
his voice is quite unique, I know no one that sounds similair to him.
but oh well, didn't like this poll too much anyway

oh you mean the studio enhanced (i.e. looped) scream in the grudge?
ELL. OH. ELL! I honestly hope you're kidding.
I'm going to assume that you're confusing the Eulogy scream with the true 26 second scream on The Grudge. The Eulogy scream is obviously looped,(Or perhaps just slathered in echo) but it's all Maynard in The Grudge.

Yeah, because he obviously needs to loop it when he's known for doing it even longer live
Obviously .

I was saying that if he goes longer live, it obviously proves that he needs the studio to get it that long.

sorry. it definitely sounds looped to me. i could be wrong though, as i couldve sworn that i had read it somewhere and yet can find no evidence now.
the only live version of the grudge i have is from the bootlegged mini-tour they did with king crimson and it's really not impressive.

In my opinion you should have made Rock and Metal on a totally different poll. How could anyone compare the singer from Pink Flolyd (Rock) to Angela Gossow/Johan Liva from Arch Enemy (Metal) they are totally different styles right? Then why should they be rated on the same scale? If there was a metal / rock vocalist showdown, now that would rule. You take the winner from a bunch of metal vocalists from one poll and contend them with the winner of the rock vocalist poll. Am I right or wrong here?

It was between Angela Gossow and King Diamond for me. Angela's a great vocalist, and more talented than many vocalists doing the same style, but King Diamond's more creative.

While (Insert Oprea Singer Name) may be "better" at singing (larger vocal range, pitch, ect) I might hate his voice and will like some "un-talented" singer better. Everyone here has based their votes off preference, whether or not the singer is better or not. This really is a popularity contest whether the thread title states differently.

wrong. i've tried my best to remain impartial. i voted for phil anselmo and i dont much like pantera or down. but i can admit that he's a great vocalist.
and even if the majority votes based on personal preference, cant you just pretend otherwise?
