View Full Version : The Coolest Band You've Never Heard of #1 - Tsu Shi Ma Mi Re

Tsu Shi Ma Mi Re is another one of those acts of three Japanese girl crazy. What separates them from those names you've heard dropped before (and never really cared about beyond soaking up the novelty of it) is the band's versatile songwriting, wide range of influences, and raw enthusiasm.
Like I said, they're a three piece, made up of guitarist and vocalist Mari, bassist Yayoi, and drummer Mizue. I don't know their last names, and I honestly don't think anyone does. I consider them a fairly young band; they formed back in 1999, but it was just last year (2004) that they released their debut album, Pregnant Fantasy. Funny name, eh? That's a taste of how they present themselves lyrically... if you can understand Japanese. You probably can't, so it doesn't matter.
The album they've put out is really amazing for a debut. It drips with versatility, to the point no two songs sound much the same - yet, they manage to never lose focus. The core of it all I'd have to label as playful rock, but there's influence from punk, avant garde, jazz, surf rock, pop, maybe a pinch of ska, and there are even some vaguely hardcore tendences in a couple of places.
I could extend this writeout to a sprawling essay if I really had to, but I don't have to, because this thread is less about history and more about me giving you guys cool music.
Drop your e-mail for the samples.
A side but related note: I saw them live a few weeks ago. They put on a ****ing amazing and energetic show, and I got my copy of the CD signed by all three of them.

That YSI link is going to get killed really quick.
Anyway, I'm always interested in more J-rock. Just send the YSI songs to me at atomsh@gmail.com.

I've got a second cooking right now, and I'll load up a third after that, and more if those two get raped during/before prime time tomorrow.

Alright, the YSI links are out.
Thanks very much. Pretty much anything that fuses loads of genres together is something that I'm willing to check out. And I've never heard anything about these guys either, which is cool. Just out of interest, why did it take them so long to put out an album?
I don't know why, honestly, but I don't think there were any serious or dramatic causes. They did release two demos in that that time - one in 1999, and a second in 2001.
Actually, I did enjoy Go!Go!7188 quite a bit (I think you were the one that sent that one out). Hmmm...
Yeah, that was me that sent that. Go!Go! is great, so I might send them out in this series, as they are pretty unknown (outside of Japan), but I'm going to abstain at least a little while on that because it's going to be a struggle for me to send out non-Japanese bands, I love them too much. :p
Tsu Shi Ma Mi Re is more experimental/quirky than Go!Go!7188.
Are they like Melt Banana?
No, they're a less aggressive kind of band. There's really no metal influences in Tsu Shi Ma Mi Re's mix.
What's the name mean?
Yeah, like Red said, it's just a word they made up.
Evan, feel free to send me something.

From the booklet:
What hide inside manhole?
I think that three is a lake where bones of died man gather and sink,
name of the lake is Shikotsu-ko(dead-bone-lake)
Manhole may continue to the lake.
Broken English is so adorable.

Okay:
Ebihara Shinji
My favourite of the three samples. I love the quirky little intro, with the guitar and the drum lead-in. Then we have some catchy riffing, and the vocals, which are both hilarious and easy to listen to. Great song, and a nice length also.
Manhole
Unlike Evan, I do not like Manhole that much. It seems to go nowhere in particular, especially considering it is 5.38 in length.
Also, the tone on the guitars irritates me a bit. It has some cool moments though, like the bass intro.
Kedama Boogie
This one is fun! Seriously. Nothing wrong at all with such a great song. But I still prefer Ebihara more.

Thankyou for introducing me to this band!

Very intriguing stuff indeed. I like songs that keep changing so this works for me, though "Manhole" was a little long-winded.

Heh heh, I personally just think the part where they're both screaming Manhole over and over like clowns is brilliant.
I despised that part. Ugh.

Ebihara Shinji:
Very nice intro, a very good interpretation of intros in Japanese enka music. the introduction of each instrument is done well, and the balance of the volume on each instrument is just right. great riff, nice vocal techniques, not too sure about the lyrics though :p (something about spending a night with Ebihara Shinji, which is a name of a man). still, the length is good, and it has a good outro.
Manhole:
starts off very quietly, and the vocals are done well, since the words sung are the kinds of things kids say to their parents (for example, something like 'i heard there are people living inside that manhole'. its hard to describe, really). the song changes after 2:30 or so, and it gets very interesting. the bass riff is great, and the singer does a great job here, building up her vocals with the song. it then goes back to the riff of the first part, and then comes a pretty long outro. its a bit too long, since it takes up about half the song. still, its very enjoyable.
Kedama Boogie:
awesome, awesome drum line. the bass line is sweet, as is the guitar. this goes on for about 1:30, and then the style changes. the lyrics, like Ebihara Shinji, is a bit random, but i suppose with a title like 'cottonball boogie', its fine to complain about your boyfriend mis-treating a sweater you made for him. i really like the background vocals in this song. the length is good too, and the vocalist does well. i did prefer the intro part to the slower part, though.
ok?
