Alice in Chains is one of the few grunge bands I like. When I listen to their self-titled ablum, I always start feeling low. Still a great band. Cantrall(sp?) is a good guitarist. We Die Young, Angry Chair, Them Bones, God Am. All wonderful songs.

I think AIC was the best mainstream band of the 90's, Jerry Cantrell is one of the most underated guitarists of all time, Layne Staley had the best voice(everybody should vote for him), Mike Inez really improve bass picking.
"Dirt" and "Jar of Flies" are imo two of the most important albums in modern rock/ metal history.

Yeah Layne was great. Had a sad life, but something great came out of it with Alice In Chains.
alice in chains edges more on metal i feel, much like Soundgarden did. Those two bands didn't typify the grunge sound though i feel, and neither does Pearl Jam lol strangely enough. This is running on the idea that Nirvana is pure grunge, lol, these four bands sound virtually nothing alike to me despite the fact they came out the same scene. Anyone else think this?

Yeah actually that is how I picture them. Those bands right there (Soundgarden, AIC, and Pearl Jam) are the only grunge bands I really like. I do think that AIC were a lot heavier than most grunge bands, and had some metal influences like We Die Young.

They are Grunge; but you have to remember Grunge isn't a musical genre, it was a lifestyle movement during the 90's.

I'm pretty sure that's not even them. And even if it is, it's not what they 'do' usually. I don't know why you would only listen to that over all of their great material.

Alice In Chains were great, and that's a good song, I love real "crunch" of a guitar intro.
They were lumped in with grunge, but they were really more heavy metal.

If you have the buck don't buy any, rather buy yourself Dirt and Jar Of Flies.
The greatest hits are not worth the buck. But if you really want a greatest hits I would go with the second one.The third one is obviously better but will be more expensive as it is a double disc.

Layne Staley is possibly the best singer in the rock/metal category as a whole.
I can think of a few people that would beat him out, but...man, what a voice. And a range.
I love the harmonies he and Cantrell would pull off. It sounded like a built-in chorus.

Well that was because at the time we had a really great FA on them written by Zep, there was no need for another one. Now that the FA has gone down the pages there is more of a need, it's nothing personal

"Them Bones" was about his fear of death, he talks about the fact that after you die you will become a pile of "Them Bones"
I Believe Them Bones Are Me
Some Say We're Born Into The Grave
I Feel So Alone
Gonna End Up A Big Ole Pile A Them Bones
Dust Rise Right On Over My Time
Empty Fossil Of The New Scene
I Feel So Alone
Gonna End Up A Big Ole Pile A Them Bones
Toll Due Bad Dream Come True
I Lie Dead Gone Under Red Sky
I Feel So Alone
Gonna End Up A Big Ole Pile A Them Bones
I guess it is pretty obvious once you read the lyrics:rolleyes:

it wouldn't be the same without Layne, and Jerry isn't that great a singer compared to him. I heard they might get the frontman for Damageplan to fill in but thats just a rumor.
Couldn't they get back together with just Jerry singing?
they could, but I don't think Jerrys vocals are strong enough to sing Laynes songs, there would always be that underwhelming feeling that he's not up to scratch.

I heard they might get the frontman for Damageplan to fill in but thats just a rumorYeah Pat Lachman sung with them on their re-unin gig thing aswell as James Maynard and a few others. overall i'd say that Jar of Flies is my fave album. I like everything that they've done, but JoF is just so good. it has such a sweet feel to it, like really dark but mellow and soothing at the same time. Rotten Apple is probably my favourite song.

maybe they can kind of do what Judas Priest did, and find a cover band singer to replace Layne. I know it wouldn't be the same, but that's the best that could be done. Or they could just get a new singer and sound different. Because Layne's voice was such a huge part of the band, a new sounding singer would be odd.

It would be cool if they got Maynard to fill in for Layne again
Maynard seems to have a bit of a habit of whoring himself to other bands.
Who thinks this would be an AWESOME idea!! (Although i did say that Cantrell was just as if not more of a talented vocalist than Layne..)
And i know the 2nd one isnt quite related but what other bands has he "whored" himself to?? Perfect circle hardly counts... Tori amos?

I hate when there's multiple releases of an album with all different song listings. It drives me nuts. Like Black Sabbath, for example, there's like 4 different versions, some have Evil Woman, some don't, and they all have the tracks in different orders and crap.

Doctors removed bone fragments and repaired cartilage from Jerry Cantrell's shoulder.
Tuesday, December 13, 2005
Alice In Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell is recovering in the hospital after injuring his shoulder.
Cantrell, 39, was treated in a Los Angeles hospital last week by doctor Stephen Lombardo, who removed bone fragments and repaired cartilage from his left shoulder.
Cantrell's publicist Bob Merlis confirms the rocker will recover in time for a concert with the surviving members of Alice In Chains and Heart in March. Singer Layne Staley died from a drug overdose in 2002.

he was heavily addicted through the writing of facelift, sap, dirt, jar of flies, and tripod.
the only time he was clean was when he went off with mike mccready and did Mad Season. that project was basically put together to keep him clean, which didnt work. he slipped back into the heroin during tripod and for the unplugged session. then he reclused himself in his apartment and died alone

It's a possibilty but i doubt it.......I read somewhere that he was actually clean for awhile before he died which could explain the accidental overdose if it actually was an accident.
He was locked up in his apartment doing drugs for like three freaking months before he died.
He lost his teeth and was crapping his pants. He said he no longer got high, that he just needed the drug to live, and then he speedballed. And died.

That's such a tragedy, that drugs can do that to someone.

I was reading some of the AIC lyrics, it is almost impossible to think Layne Staley's end wouldn't be so tragic.
Them Bones:
I Feel So Alone
Gonna End Up A Big Ole Pile A Them Bones
Sickman:
I Can See The End Is Getting Near
I Won't Rest Untill My Head Is Clear
Nutshell:
And yet I fight
This battle all alone
No one to cry to
No place to call home
I know some of the lyrics were written by Cantrell, but the emotion was coming from Layne.

Alice in Chains is one of the few bands that when they play "sad songs" I really end up feeling depressed. Layne and Cantrell's harmonizing vocals can be really eerie and full of sad emotion.

Very true. Very few bands can convey emotions as well as they did.

Actually i think AIC is the only band who can actually play with emotions in a depressing way, not only the music and the vocals, the lyrics are one of the most important facts.

i don't care about what i didnt read in this thread or whats already been said, i'm just going to say my bit
in my opinion, most of AIC's acoustic work is much better than their heavy/grunge stuff. songs like Rotten Apple, Nutshell, I Stay Away, Right Turn and Brother are just so good and emotive !!!
of course, they have great heavy/non acoustic songs as well (Rooster, Man in the Box, Grind, Sludge Factory, Them Bones, Would?, Bleed the Freak, Over Now, Down in a Hole)
i personally own Dirt, Jar of Flies, Nothing Safe: Best of the Box, Sap and self titled. they're all great though JOF is my favourite.
that was terribly written and i am (not) ashamed of it

God Am is a pretty sweet tune. I really can't think of a single AIC song that I don't like. Except Rotten Apple, I don't know why, but that song, I've never liked.

This is a weird thread. It'll come up every few weeks, die, and come back again. Which is a good thing because AIC is a good band.

I love this band. It's a shame Layne get's nowhere near the proper recognition because his death is overshadowed by Kurt Cobain's.
