Anybody here fans of Yes? If so what are good songs and albums to check out? I've heard a few such as "heart of the sunrise, long distance runaround, roundabout," but I want to hear what you guys think are some of their best tracks ever composed.

Would you guys say these old school proggers are comparable to any of the current prog bands?

Extremly cheesy band with a couple of great musicians. They do absoultly nothing for me but some people really dig them. If you're a fan of Prog you'll most likely find something by them that you enjoy. Try Yessongs if you're not sure.

hmm i've never heard any of their stuff, but i like prog bands like rush and king crimson. i'll download those songs you mentioned.

EDIT: oh, and yeah, i prefer old prog to current prog.

I love Yes. They are one of the best bands on earth.

Some of their best songs are (off the top of my head):
Mind Drive (Keys To Ascension 2)
Starship Troopers (The Yes Album)
Owner Of A Lonely Heart (90125)
South Side Of The Sky (Fragile)
Magnification (Magnification)
It Can Happen (90125)
Clap - Sudio Version (The Yes Album)
I've Seen All Good People (The Yes Album)
Going For The One (Going For The One)
Close To The Edge (Close To The Edge)
Turn Of The Century (Going For The One)
Parallels (Going For The One)

...the list goes on. Yes are one of THE ultimate bands. I recommend you listen to The Yes Album, Magnification, 90125 and Fragile. Those albums rock.

Owner of a Lonely Heart is their only song that I have heard. It seems ok, but there is some really annoying bit in the middle that sounds quite 80s. I listen to old music, but that bit is really typical in your face 80s. It just bothers me for some reason. Either way, I'm planning to check out more Yes when I can get a hold of their albums.

Yes are really amazing, I saw them live last year. They can still kick ***. I recommend The Yes Album, Close To The Edge, Tales From Topographic Oceans, and Magnification. Listen to Dreamtime off of Magnification.

Lots of bass players cite Chris Squire as their inspiration, along with Geddy Lee and that whole prog crowd, although Steve Howe and Rick Wakeman have great chops too. There's soo much potential in that band, but their songwriting is kinda hit or miss from my perspective, sometimes they groove, others it's generic 70s synth stuff.

Anyway, I love some of their songs, I'm suprised I'm the first to mention Roundabout:p

I've been waiting for a Yes thread to pop up. Yes is simply amazing, the musicianship on their classic lineup is sky high. Jon Anderon has a great voice, Steve Howe is one of greatest guitarists ever, there rythim section is unbelievable with Chris Squire picking a bass better and faster than most finger players could ever hope to. And of course Rick Wakemen is (along with Keith Emerson) the true pioneer of the synth.

Lets make this thread stay!

sure thing. You guys know any songs that show Yes' extremely talents? Like I wanna hear the bass going insane, the guitarist busting out wicked solos, the keyboardist playing jaw-dropping melodies, and the drummer doing his prog thing.

Bass has a pretty cool groove in "Roundabout"

Yessongs (Live) is my favorite Yes cd. If you're just starting out, get the Yes Album first. I've Seen All Good People is the song that got me into Yes. The Yes Album is probably the easiest album of theirs to get into and then you can check out stuff like Yessongs, Fragile, and Close to the Edge.

They are amazingly talented.

The song that got me into Yes was Heart of the Sunrise, and it's still probably my favourite. That or Close to the Edge.

I really like just about everything from "The Yes Album" until "Relayer". "Topographic Oceans" was pretty good for me, but it was definately no "Close to the Edge". After "Tales From Topographic Oceans", I felt that they really went downhill alot more.

It was a shame that they had so many line-up changes, at least I think they could've had more "longevity" as a band if they had a really steady line-up. I think they're best line-up was on "Close to the Edge" where it was Anderson, Howe, Squire, Wakeman, Bruford. Alan White was really good, but for some reason I just prefer Bruford to White.

Saw them live with Dream Theater one time. They are literally the cheesiest band I've ever heard. They had all these psychadelic, love-peace colours and banners everywhere, and the average age onstage must have been 478. Their music isn't too good.

Tales From Topographic Oceans is one of the best prog albums ever made. Period.

I definitely think they are a band better heard than seen. I bought a live DVD and they're not particularly fun to watch. And the outfits and the stage looked terrible. But hey, as long as the musics good.

No.

They are both fans of each other though, Steve Howe has performed with DT before.

Yes is an awesome band. "Heart of the Sunrise" and "Close to the Edge" are the best songs I've heard from them so far, but I also need to hear "Siberian Khatru" and "And You And I" first.

Squire, Anderson, and Wakeman drive the melody for the most part. It's what really sets them apart from other prog bands: the guitar hardly drives the songs at all. Bass and keys

One of the favorite classic rock bands. Going For The One is a really good album that most people dont mention. Yessong, Close To The Edge, Fragile are all good but they have a lot of other albums out. Relayer and Going for The One are a couple of my favorite Yes albums. Close To The Edge is real good though. I dont think thered be a Tool without Yes.

My father is a huge Yes fan, and since my father doesn't listen to his vinyl and cd albums anymore I took most of them for myself (only the 70's stuff tho, their 80's and 90's albums have some really bad stuff on it). The only one I bought myself is Fragile since my father lost his copy of that one. I think that's their best album, together with Relayer (underrated and overlooked album). Tales of Topographic Oceans is one complex album.

I think I've heard practically everything they released in the 70's and the biggest part of what they did in the 80's and the 90's. I only own an mp3 version of Close To The Edge tho, need to replace that with vinyl.:)
