my new crazy idea is to make a guitar from scratch. Ive had very little experience in this area the only thing ive ever done is sand my old ones and completely unassembled them, but thats about the extent of my guitar designing. My grandpa has a pretty well equipped shop for doing all this so i was wandering if anyone had any basic tips such as what kind of wood to use or what kind of dimensions to use for the neck pocket so it doesnt sound like a twangy POS.
I was planning on using cherry and the nusing a satin finish if that would work ok.
any help is appriciated thanks

Why not ask your granddad? Wouldn't he know more about htis if he has all the stuff to do it?
Edit: Also, there's a book you can get about building your own guitar with aforeword from Brian May. Try your local library, it seemed a pretty good guide when I read it.

Google's a good research tool as well. (Not trying to be a jerk or overly sarcastic, just pointing out the obvious)
