View Full Version : the location of jaco's basses

Well, I was reading an article on Jaco and it said the location of his basses is unknown, and I went to the U.M. recently and took some courses up there on Bass. As some of you may know Jaco taught there. The bass teacher over there claims to have one his old fenders. I dont recall if he has the fretted or fretless but i do know his was sunburst and it looked a lot like Jaco's. Could it be true?

It could be...get a picture of it if you can. If it's a Jazz Bass, it's possible it COULD be his, but I can't guarantee anything.

I remember seeing that someone posted a thread about "one" of jacos basses on e bay that was sold for $15.000 or something near that price, it was a black j bass not sure. The dude that sold it had pics of him with jaco and it was autographed.

well it could be one of jacos fretted ones, when he allegidly "left" the bass of doom on a park bench, like one of the maple fretboard ones

im going to say its doubtful, didnt jacos bass get stolen off of a park bench when he slept there

I read that he'd gotten drunk and picked a fight with a bouncer, then the bouncer beat him so bad he died the next day (or several days later, I can't remember). I have no idea how accurate this is, since I read it on Wikipedia, so I wouldn't hold it as fact.

does your teacher's bass match any of those? At least by memory?

1960 Fender Jazz, SN 57308

Jaco's main fretted Jazz Bass, a two-tone sunburst, of average weight and "very resonant" according to Kaufman. This was Jaco's main bass on tour with Joni Mitchell; it can be seen and heard on her Shadows and Light album and DVD. Its whereabouts are unknown.

JAco is one of those cool guys who's so surrounded by mystery.
I don't know I'm kind of glad that he's not here to polute his legacy. I mean look at several my favourite musicians allen Woody, Jim morrison, bonham prevented sad Led Zep reunions. He could have ended up like Neil Diamond. Musical genious who was allowed to live too long, or pete townsend, angry and bitter because its over, alternately he could have ended up like cream to come back and be better musicians who still rock. We'll never know.

I'd like to believe it is his bass, why not, lets not all be so cynical

Jaco didnt beat his wife, one of his later girlfriends you to hit him and, hed "get back at her" by going out and getting totally smashed. the bouncer, a vietnamese refugee trained in martial arts, at the club didnt let him because he looked drunk, when jaco protested he beat him by smashing his head in to the concrete repeatly. he was later arrested for agravated murder, and released four years later for "good behavoir." jacos bass of doom, his sunburst 1962 fretless epoxied jazz bass, was indeed stolen in the village as he had left it somewhere without a case as he slept. normally hed have puerto rican man named angel guard it, but no one knows what happened. the bass of doom and a baby blue 62 fretted were both stolen. no one knows where they are. being that stolen basses and guitars are often broken down and sold piece by piece thats probably what happened to jacos, the most notable mark to identify his bass would be writing on the neck that says "custom finished for jaco pastorius by" and i cant remember the name but it was something like kevin kauffman, but im really not sure. jacos friends put up posters in the village offering a reward for the return the basses, but niether were recovered. *** for the guy at U.M. jaco wasnt a rich guy, in his UM days he only had the epoxied fretless and possibly a green jazz bass which he borrowed and defreted while touring with wayne cochane and the c.c. riders but im not sure if he had it back then. the chances are really next to nothing that the dude at U.M. has one of his. Jacos first 1961 jazz bass was on ebay quite some time ago. it was black, fretted, with pots that jaco had replaced by himself. it went for something over $15,000. of course when he had the money with weather report, he went through a rainbow of vintage jazz basses, including the natural finish one he is shown playing on the back of invitation, and another sunburst fretted, which he is seen playing on the begining of Shadows and Light with Joni Mitchell.

i did too... well, atleast 1 or 2 of them?... Jaco had so many bass's (From what it seems... "rainbow of vintage bass's" seems pretty extravagent [sp?]) so, they had to be passed down to someone?...

that's very sad... Why wouldn't someone speak up saying "hey, i've got jaco's rainbow bass"... or.. "neck" or something, ya know? it's a shame it seems to have just... vanished off the face of the earth...

Jaco was manic-depressive (bi-polar) which was compounded by years of drug and alcohol abuse....how tragic for such an inovative musician to die so young. You have to ask yourself what he, or the likes of Jimi Hendricks would have accomplished if they had lived longer.

When he died, he was becoming a crappy musician, a poor businessman, and a plan old bad coworker. It's not like he died on the peak of his career like Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, etc. He died when NOBODY wanted to work with him.

So yes, he could still be alive now, and he would still be a bass icon.

I think your thumb will bend the more you play, simply because of the way you hold the neck. My left thumb is noticably more bent than my right.

I read that he'd gotten drunk and picked a fight with a bouncer, then the bouncer beat him so bad he died the next day (or several days later, I can't remember). I have no idea how accurate this is, since I read it on Wikipedia, so I wouldn't hold it as fact.

i found this on a fender website....

Jaco’s story ended in tragedy, however; he began to suffer from mental illness, which, had it been successully treated, would likely have been diagnosed as a bipolar affective disorder. In addition, he began to abuse alcohol and drugs, something he had strictly avoided earlier in his career. Friends, family and associates saw disturbing changes in his behavior, and he became increasingly alienated from them. In 1987, at the age of 35, he was beaten to death by a bouncer outside of a nightclub in Florida, a brutal end to a brilliant career.

Your thumbs aren't double jointed, that's just having a hitchhikers thumb. Some people's bend back further(like Jaco's) some don't(like Pinhead). Now if I could take pictures with this stupid webcam I could show you double jointed fingers.

Who cares where his basses are? I know I wouldn't have the money to buy one of them if one actually turned up. I just count myself gratefull that I have heard him play (on CD's) and I know his impact on bass playing won't change one bit if someone found the Bass of Doom.

P.S. Do I win with the sappy **** now?
