hey guys.
i am in the market for a new drumset. i will be buying it fairly soon.

i have the sizes pretty much made up but i cannot for the life of me decide on a finish, and now even the building materials!!!!!

i was pretty sure i would buy a gold sparkle/glitter with gold hardware.

now i find myself lusting after a few acrylic sets.

i really like how the combination of clear shells and gold hardware looks
or
that burnt orange color (dont know the name) and gold hardware......unless they make gold colored acrylic shells (the closest color to the gold hardware).

what do you guys think of these combos? keep in mind the kit is only a 4 peice.....i think big acrylic sets are ugly.

i will also be playing jungle/drum & bass music a large majority of the time so i think the sound of acrylic would fit in well, no?

also if you guys have any pics of these color combos that would be awsome, since i have never seen the gold/gold combo, i just imagine it would look really snazy :naughty:

thanks for reading this novel

Wouldnt you want a tighter sound for those purposes? Acrylic drums as I understand are big and open sounding. You should check out some Jojo Mayer clips and see what you think after that.

most transparent acrylic drums look best with chrome hardware... I agree. But he can get them(The shells) so they appear as a finish.

im thinking about an acrylic set too... they just look really nice. They are something you really have to play first. There is so much transient attack to them. I personally think they dont fit into many situations. I would much rather have a nice Maple shell.

No, he don't. He buys'em from Gold-N-Times.

does he play an acrylic set? or does he like gold hardware? never listen to blink 182 so i never got into travis, but i would say i like what i have heard of him.
*not trying to turn this thread into one of those travis barker arguments*

i think i need a gold acrylic shell with gold hardware! does anyone make a gold acrylic shell? the amber is the closest thing to gold i can find.

i seem to come back to this gold on gold combo no matter what i do
(was going to get gold glitter/gold hardware before this acrylic business)

so coaway can get ahold of gold if they dont have it in? if not i would think amber is close enough.

Conaway. As I said earlier :)

i only see the color "vistalite amber" on the conaway website.

are amber and gold 2 different colors? or are the two words interchangable?
the amber seems a bit too on the orange side of things.

i would like gold shells to match the gold hardware as best as i can. even tho i do think amber would look very good with the gold hardware i would rather buy a "gold" acrylic shell so i know im getting that color.....ya know?

do they make acrylic shells with a sort of "brushed" finish? something that looks like frosted glass, that diffuses the light that comes through it?

I'm not really a huge fan of anything other than stained/finished wood, but that would look hot with chrome hardware and coated white heads.

Acrylic sets are awesome, but I would only have it as a second kit personally.

Jon Theodore plays an acrylic set mostly and it has a very different sound. Seems pretty cardboardy, poppy, kind of sound. If you like that sort of thing it can be fun, but while they are pretty cool I don't personally think they can replace a nice wood kit.

^I agree, it's tone would never replace a good wood kit, but acrylics have their place. I played one a while ago, I've never heard a bass drum with so much boom and just... bassy tone. The bass was so deep, the floor tom sounded like a bass drum, the high tom sounded like a floor tom... it was insane, and didn't look half bad, which you would think might happen with 5 acrylics that are all a different color.

Those toms would sound so weird together, a 12 by 6 woudl give u much a high pop and then a 16 by 14 would be such a low bong. Travis Barker 101.

Anyway my personal opinion on Acrylic sets or drums in general is to stay away, I don't like the look or the sound. Give me some nice Mapel anyday.

Better off with a 13" instead of a 12" if you're dead-set on a 16" floor.

I like the 12 16 combo more than the 13 16 combo personally.

I play 12 16 at church.

I went for a hybrid - maple in a black sparkle + flurescent green acrylic. You might want to take a look at a few as in theory you are getting the best of both worlds.

I wanted the above kit specifically for live use though, so I might have had a rethink if I was going to do some big recording with it.

Hmm live use an Arcrylic would probably be fine, with mics and everything they would sound like any other drum but yeah, I wouldn't record with them.

i think just like any other drum, the material makes a big difference, but acrylic usualy suprises people on how it sounds, it doesnt sound plastic is what i guess im trying to say. tuning has a lot to do with it too.

but here is a little sound clip i found on drummerworld. go down to the video. one guy is playing a wood kit, i dont know what and the other guy is playing acrylic. i was suprised how much they sing and how clear they were.

ok, so i have been looking around for gold acrylic shells. no one seems to make this color except for pork pie.....i think. the idea i got from theor website is that they make their own acrylic shells and will do any color. its just they are sooo expensive. the bass drum costs as much as a full conaway kit.

do the actual prices match their list prices? or if i asked for a quote would it be quite a bit lower than what their website has be beleiving?

i have heard only very good things about prok pie acrylics too.

Reminds me of somthing Francis, over at FVF drums, did. A Maple Black Sparkle, with hot pink Acrylic.

For any Thrice fans out there I do believe he used an acrylic kit for the recording of Vhessiu.
