View Full Version : Punk Problem
this has been a problem for me for a while but ive never really thought about it untill now and im wondering if this is a problem for anybody else.
where i live (central wisconsin(just south of green bay(packers totally suck this season)))it is a problem that no one listens to punk. like no one. im in a band and we cant land a show because no one like the type of music we play. totally depressing.
but its worse. no one will talk about music with me becasue they all talk about how great the new green day song is or about how great ashlee simpson's hair looked on mtv last week.
i know that we listen to the elite genre punk of music and allm, but does anyone have the same problem as me?

What you wanna do is get your band out in the street sith their amps and do one really awesome hardcore cover of American Idiot, then a couple of Clash covers (Should I Stay and I Fought The Law always go down well) then a couple of original tracks and then hand out leaflets about your band. Or stickers or patch stencils or somthing.

Yeah if they want police attention and bad publicity. It won't help them if nobody likes them anyway. Unless they **** up someone famous, like a Packer, then all the would-be punks would realise how cool they are.
I only know who the Packers are 'cos of That 70's Show :upset:.

I absolutely love Ska. Ska is my baby. But all my friends listen to ghey p0p-punX0rz. It pisses the hell out of me because they're always like "Hah hah, Ska sucks!". But I listen to Ska despite them.
Don't let it get to you, you'll catch a break eventually. You just have to find your niche in the punk scene.

we kind of do that. we play a lot of me first and the gimme gimmes stuff becasue people know the songs. we have to play too many covers to be heard. when we try to throw some of our stuff in there they hate it

There's more punk kids than you'd think in the area. Where there are kids, there are kids who are looking for an alternative. Just keep on your grind, make flyers, piss off some authority, get some cred, and the kids will come to the shows...

My problem is that pretty much none of my friends like punk or ska or any of that good stuff. My school is obsessed with sh'itty jam bands, or rap and whatever else is on MTV. Plus, the few other kids at my school that actually listen to punk are all racist b'astards, so I don't want to be friends with them anyway. That's why I can't wait to go to college and hopefully make some new friends that like punk and ska and psychobilly and whatnot.

actually im pretty proud of something we did this summer.....but first you need to know some background. wisconsin is generally a democratic state, proud to be blue. but in appleton where i live, everybody is conservative and republican all the way. anyway..
one ****ty band rented the city park and it has a stage so they played and had other ****ty bands play too. we asked them if we could play 2 songs and they agreed because they are dumb. a lot of the crowd there were parents of members of the ****ty bands. but they were all voters, republican voters.
so we got up there, introduced ourselves, and played idiot son of an as$hole and murder the government by nofx. the crowd was stunned, and we left.
one of my finer moments and we got some cred for it

I'm pretty sure lots of people have this problem considering the takeover of punk by bands like My Chemical Romance and Good Charlotte. People like being trendy and don't like opening their minds and think outside of the box. The only solution is to move, or play some American Idiot songs.

It's not too hard to get gigs anywhere. In the few gigs my band has had someone bruised their face on the PA, guitarist got in a fight, someone knocked themselves out by falling of the speaker, broken amps, been told to turn down everything half way through our set etc...
We still get gigs. You don't have to play in your town. Get gigs in other towns and spread your music. The less you play in your own town the better. Crowds are easier to like bands from another part of the country!

We seriously need a shakeup of the mainstream punk scene. When I sort out this band thing (anyone living in London?) I'm gonna try and get a gig at WOMAD Festival (World Organisation of Music, Art and Dance Festival). It's an awesome festival and they never have any proper badass punkers there.

If you wanna score with someone, get all sweaty on stage, rip off all your clothes (it shows you dont give a damn), and if you can, slash yourself once, very lightly, across the chest diagonally. it looks just super-ultra-awesome when the blood mixes with sweat, and it doesn't hurt, and any girls up front will be trying like crazy to grab your package. trust me, i've seen this work.

:( sorry dude. Still, if you happen to see Anti-Flag or The Dwarves playing near you, you must go. Anti-Flag are fun as heck to scream along to, and they interact really well with the crowd. The Dwarves, you can never understand half of what he's singing, but they're really funny live. Especially the guitarist, he came on in Leeds completely naked except for a gimp mask and started playing out, then the rest of the band came out and kicked booty. They encouraged a fan to climb up the tent's centre pole and jump into the crowd from like 20 feet up.
