Hmm
Albums (in order of bass greatness):
"The Songs that make you feel Good, not just for the bass!" - Artist - The Musicman.
Check it out!
Manadar

Song Review - Stevie Wonder
or definately check out the song: I Wish - Stevie W.
Edit: And don't use any tabs, they're all wrong!
Edit 2: Oh and he adds a lot of Ghost notes and slides etc. later on in the song so don't think it's easy when he starts playing eights at around 70/80 bpm

OK, they are reasonably good albums with bass on, but what happened to Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning?
Echobrain - Glean = hardly anybody bought this album but it has some really good bass on it, theres no tabs for any of the songs off this second album so some studying might be invovled.

Unfortunetly true, but I like their music too much :upset: except St.Anger.
But I think its reasonably well known their best stuff was from the start to the Black Album. Everything after that never really stood up in comparison.

A good majority of my recommendations have been posted...
I suppose any 311 or Incubus (with Dirk Lance) and any of The Cure's early albums (I guess Disintegration for the sake of Stan and Kyle)
Down - NOLA & Down II (A Bustle in your Hedgerow)
Gang of Four - Return the Gift (really any, it's just that this album has stunning production. Plus it's kind of a "greatest hits" sort of thing)
Opeth - Orchid & Morningrise (really interesting bass pieces that just stand out, not to debase latter albums)
Pantera - Reinventing the Steel
The Pixies - Surfer Rosa, Doolittle, Bossanova
Slayer - Show No Mercy & Hell Awaits (beyond those it's hard to hear the bass)
The Smashing Pumpkins - Gish, Siamese Dream, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
Tool - Opiate
Type O Negative - October Rust & World Coming Down

Joni Mitchell - Hejira, a great, overlooked bass album.
Aghora - Aghora, awesome rhythm section

Opeth - Orchid, Morningrise, Damnation (the groove Mendez has is astonishing)
Nice choice with the Opeth. A bit of trivia though, Mendez didn't play bass for Orchid or Morningrise, it was actually their first bassist (i forget his name at the moment) who was later fired or something because he "didn't fit in with the band". I thought he was great. But Mendez is great as well.
anyways, my bass albums:
Anacrusis - Suffering Hour, Reason, Manic Impressions, and Screams and Whispers (this little known progressive thrash band has some great basslines, and i wish they were still together)
Anthrax - Among The Living, Fistfull of Metal, and Return of the Killer A's (a good greatest hits album. All of these I think include the best bass of Anthrax)
Black Sabbath - Any one with Geezer Butler
Cream - All
Death - Human, Fate, and Indivudual Thought Patterns
Dream Theater - All
Emerson Lake and Palmer - All (I think Greg Lake is underrated)
Green Day - Dookie, and Insomiac
Guns 'N Roses - Appetite for Destruction
Iced Earth - Horrow Show
Incubus - Fungus Amongus, Make Yourself, and Morning View
Into Eternity - Dead or Dreaming, and Buried in Oblivion
Iron Maiden - All
John Paul Jones - Zooma
Led Zeppelin - All of them, but I think Led Zeppelin II is John Paul Jones's best
Liquid Tension Experiment - Liquid Tension Experiment, and 2
Live - All (another underrated bassist)
Mastodon - Remission, and Leviathan
Megadeth - Killing is My Business... And Business is Good, Peace Sells, But Who's Buying?, So Far, So Good... So What!, and Rust In Peace
Metallica - Kill 'Em All, Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets, Metallica, Load, and ReLoad (yes, Jason is good as well)
Mudvayne - L.D. 50, and The End of All Things to Come
Necrophagist - Onset of Putrefaction, and Epitaph
Opeth - All, but Orchid and Morningrise are the best
Overkill - All, but check out The Years of Decay for the best stuff
Pantera - Check it all out, Rex is pretty good
Primus - All
Quo Vadis - Defiant Imagination
Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against the Machine, Evil Empire, and The Battle of Los Angeles
Red Hot Chili Peppers - All, but empahsis on stuf before By The Way
Rush - All
Sikth - Let the Transmitting Beginning, and The Trees Are Dead And Dried Out, Wait For Something Wild...
Slipknot - Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat.
Spastic Ink - Ink Compatatble, and Ink Complete (amazing bass, definitley check out)
Symphony X - V, and The Odyssey
Tool - Aenima and Lateralus
The Who - All of thier stuff, but Tommy and the Greatest Hits albums are good starts
Yes - All of them, Chris Squire is great, but the best stuff came off of The Yes Album, Fragile, Close to the Edge, Tales From Topographical Oceans, Yessongs (amazing bass solo during "The Fish"), Relayer, Going for The One, Tormato, and Drama
plus the albums from the great solo bassists of Victor Wooten, Jaco Pastorius, Stanley Clarke, Billy Shehan, Michael Manring, Marcus Miller, and any other one I forgot that I dont' have but should get my hands on. :thumb:

Im quite sure most of the albums you have said wont teach you the role of the bass in a common band context. Please think again about what we are.
I think some useful ones would be:
RHCP - Californication
U2 - Greatest 80/90
The Cure - Greatest
Yes - The Ladder
The Beatles - Sgt. Peppers
Led Zeppelin - Greatest
Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak

11-14-2005, 08:16 AM
Also, Disturbed - The Sickness would probably be another good Bass album. As well as Static-x's Machine and Beneath, Between, Beyond
Why the hell do people mention Metallica for good bass albums? What the bloody hell is wrong with you people?
Metallica was a generic, sub-par thrash metal band of a decade that thought spandex and mullets were cool.
Stop mentioning Metallica. Seriously, just stop.

Rusty Cooley - Eponymous
Because its just one of the best instrumental albums ever. Bass player or not, nothing can deny that this is one of the most beautiful things ever created :D

Finaly someone said his name, i'd say
Squarepusher - Ultravisitor
Squarepusher - Feed Me Weird Things
The Mars Volta - De-loused in the Comatorium
Dragonforce - Sonic Firestorm(?)
Slipknot - Mate, Feed, Kill, Repeat
Just off the top of my head, the list could be endless tho.

Although I don't really think any of their other albums were that brilliant for bass, I still think Kill 'Em All should be noted just for Anesthesia.

Johan Defarfalla was his name. Another interesting bit, Mikael played bass on My Arms, Your Hearse after that album it was all Mendez.

hahahahahaHAHAHAHhahaha....
ahem..
hahahahahahaaaahaaaahahaaaaaa :D
no, terrible bass, some of the most painful ive heard...
Dark side of the moon, theres some quality bass, interaction with drums, tonnes of groove, great use of rests, tastefull fills, excellent tone, great contribution to tonality, all of which missing on Yngwie Malmsteen
Okay, maybe you're too much a bummer to appreciate the bass work on Yngwie albums....I won't go on, I'll just let you get back to biting your pillow.

Haha, yes. He's at his best on Ultravisitor bass wise I reckon.
Ruins - Tzomborgha
Fishbone - The reality of my Surroundings
Menomena - I am the Fun Blame Monster!
And for something a little less serious
Guitar Vader - From Dusk

I know, I should have clarified..I know Johan was on Orchid and Morningrise, great bassist. By the second part, I meant that the groove on Damnation is astonishing

The bass playing on Morning Rise is fantastic...Advent especially.
I'll be damned if that isn't the best opeing riff ever!

I love the sliding part in Advent about 4mins in, that makes me cum every time, heh (not literally)

I felt that the song went downhill a bit after the opeing (but how could anyone follow that riff?). The album has amazing bass parts, it sucks that Opeth fired Johann, he was brilliant.

yeah, the metal archives were down when I made my post, so I couldn't find his name at the time. And yea, something about Mikael not being confident with Martin Mendez or something, so he did it on My Arms, Your Hearse.

gotcha, yeah. Johan I think was a great bassist and really kicked ***. The slap line at the end of Nectar is so freakin great.
The groove on Damnation is great too, Mendez is great as well. His work on the new Ghost Reveries album I think is his best to date :thumb:
but still good choice putting Opeth in, as they're my favorite band.

Anything by the beatles. Paul McCartney is SO underrated. He kept the rythmical purpose of the bass, but still have it some melody. Genious.
