Slimy was the best word I could think of to describe this but I've heard it in quite a few songs. The two best examples I can think of are the intros to Waiting for an alabi and (to a lesser extent) Dancing in the moonlight, both by Thin Lizzy. I was just wondering if anybody knows how Phil Lynott gets that tone?

With a pick, a fender precision and a little black magic.
I must add though, that I know nothing about his amps, but I Have seen him with a black Prescision (with a mirror scratchplate).

I read he played a fretless on one of the Thin Lizzy albums. Not sure which one though

Fretless with a pick? I can't stand the sound of fretless basses being played with picks.

Bugger, knew I shouldn't have got a jazz.
As for the fretless, I read in his biography that he played a fretless when he was playing bass for Gary Moore when he was recording Parisienne Walkways and absolutely hated it.

Jazz>Precision in my book. If you need to try and replicate the Precision tone on your jazz, the closest you will get is soloing the neck pickup, nd lifting the bass while cutting some of the mids and treble.

I take it an S1 switch would help as well? I played about with it for a bit in the shop when I was getting it but didn't notice much difference in tone.

I always thought he was using some sort of Wah effect at the start of waiting for an alibi...

A phaser with it's rate set to one revolution every 2 seconds would also help. A flanger can be utilised as well, iff you prefer.

Yes, but Henry VIII (sort of) made his own religion, which gets my vote :p

Don't forget the whole "6 wives" thing, 2 of whom he had killed, that's worth a mention.
But Henry V could kick both their arses.
