View Full Version : Anybody like to play both guitar and bass?

6stringslinger

Sometimes I play all bass all night long, then other nights it is guitar all night and many nights I play them both equally. I like to record basslines then put guitar over them and vice versa.

If I decide to play in a band one day bass is my favorite.

Anybody else like that??

I've always been tempted to buy a decent guitar...but I don't know.

I don't feel like buying another semi-decent rig.

Both are good.
Both can help develope techniques used on both.
I like all instruments.

I enjoy guitar too. I have a 7-string Ibanez and a 6-string Schecter. I am a guitar and bass addict. I go on withdrawals during the week because of school and work

I seem to automatically balance both, if I have been playing bass for more than an hour I soon pick up the guitar and play for just as long..

i don't like playing guitar.

12... well, I like playing acoustic guitar. Not really electric.

I like playing acoustic guitar, but not the electric.

I love playing around with chordal melodies and just learning chords to songs that I can sing round campires or to women and the like.

I started learning guitar first, until I found there were some bass parts of songs I wanted to play. I played both equally for about a year until I just ended up not bothering with my guitars.

Nowadays I reckon I play my bass over my guitar at a ratio of 20:1.

I started off playing guitar but when I started playing bass it took over almost completely. It's still nice to be able to pick up an acoustic and hammer out a few chords though.

I like them both and play them both..

The nice thing with playing bass are, that you know that this or that tune is really getting spiced up even if you're just hitting a single note at each shift.
Some people refer the bass to being the glue in all modern music, and I agree. It's neat to listen to a single guitar or two play a nice tune, but I always miss the bass.

Drums and guitar doesn't work without the bass - it's tame and boring.

Plus... I'm a biiiig fan of funk and a real energetic (but well placed) funk bass is simply the prime of funk.

I play both bass more so then guitar but i originally started on acoustic guitar -> electric guitar -> bass guitar -> and now double bass as well. I'm not bad on guitar i can outplay the rythym guitarist in my band.

ps. My brother plays drums so I also can play a some simple drum beats :naughty:

Nah, I really don't enjoy playing guitar.

Drums, me like playing the drums, but nothign serious! And piano, I lvoe playing the piano, but again nothing serious.

Bass is the only instrument I spend hours on, anything else is just a kind of fiddle thing.

gaslight
11-13-2005, 06:09 AM
Piano is great :). I suck at playing in keys other than C on it though . I'll have to practice more.

I'm starting some drum lessons soon, I bought some sticks so I can play at uni sometimes.

Manadar
11-13-2005, 06:22 AM
I seriously suck at drummin, so i try sometimes when i'm at the drummer in my band and he try's to teach me a little but it isn't much. Same with Piano only i don't practice.
I play accoustic guitar sometimes but i haven't really got the hang of it.
So bass is obviously my favorite instrument of those three to play.

I've also found that everyone at school who starts playing bass just to impress has switched to guitar so there are like 2 serious bass players at school, including me *Ego *

i play both, most of my guitar playing nowadays is just to help me understand it so i can get beter at bass though. allso i only realy play acoustic guitar because wen i plug my guvnor through my electro acoustic it = huge feedback. it works ok with teh big muff though so i might use distortion more now.

Well that's much better than being the only one, because when there are more people at or about the same level musicianship as you, you are pushed to better yourself.

I'm surrounded by musicians that are tons better than me, and as overwhelming as it is sometimes, I love it!

don't get me wrong i love it, but there is one good guitarist in our entire town. but that just forces us to expand bass, right now there are 3 of us writting a song with 3 bass parts. one high up lead, one rythem/groove(thats me) and one person chording. so far it sounds good

I've played guitar longer - and in more bands - than I have played bass... The last 7 or 8 bands I've played in have been as a bassist, though... I play quite a bit of guitar, and don't even pick up a bass unless I'm playing one in a band... I find that I write easier on the guitar, and typically write a piece on the guitar, then write a bass line to it afterwards... Between the two, I find it harder to sing while playing bass, than to sing while playing guitar... I've probably got more $$$ into my bass rig than I do guitar equipment, but I've managed to keep a fair amount of guitars and a decent amp... In my current band I play bass, but we're talking about doing some "unplugged" stuff, where I'll play acoustic bass, classical, 6 string, and 12 string acoustic - and our singer and I jam with me on an acoustic guitar...

yeh! i do that. it's really convenient. if i come up with some cool chord progression, i record that on the guitar and come up with a bassline over the top.

All i really do with the guitar is shred my tits off, i have'nt got the idea of the chords yet. I find the main problem i have with it is the size, way too small and the strings just feel stupid to me. I like to have something big in my hands when i play music.

I have an acoustic guitar, which was a christmas present, and a really bad knockoff "Barracuda" brand electric guitar. I also have a fantabulous little Kustom 10 watt amp... yeah... I usually play the electric through my bass amp for a clean tone.

I mostly like to chord around on the acoustic... fiddle with chords, hammer-ons, odd rythyms that kind of thing. I also tend to occasionally play bass lines on the electric instead of the guitar line.... The electric is mostly used for melody. Usually just playing along to either a chord progression I figured out on the acoustic or whatever Winamp kicks my way...

Yeah, I play my bass through my guitar amp too. Which is also a fantabulous 10 watt Kustom. Only problem is, even with everything on low, it's still crazy loud to run my guitar through my bass amp. Meaning I can't even touch my new Zoom multi effects pedal without blowing something up.

I love playing both, I am predominantly a bass player but I play guitar a bit aswell. On bass I mainly like to play jazz and funk whereas on guitar I love metal. For a while I was trying to learn to shred and by god it helped my plectrum technique.

I started out playing guitar. It was my dads its a fender The Paul and a yamaha b212 amp and some hot tubes distortion box. It was all about 30 years old. One day my dad pulled it outof the closet and was playing and I never knew he had a electric cause all he ever played was acustic. He tought me lots of stuff then. I was better than anyone I know.

But we me and my friend got together [he plays guitar] we both piled up on the same chords and sucked. We could never let the other person play, all the songs we know had 1 guitar.

One day my dad bought me a cheap bass from guitarcenter. I have no idea why he just said it was so I could know how to play more than one instrument if I a band ever needed a bassist or something.

Before this I thought bass sucked they looked so stupid and backthen my fav band was linkin park. Me and my friend made fun of bassists and the guitars with the huge strings and how none of their parts were hard.

Well we took turns playing the bass as the other one played guitar. He was left handed so It was much easier for me to play it. Then I found RHCP I know flea isn't the hardest but when your new to bass its hard to hear it in songs so I never knew that some songs had cool basslines. but with RHCP you could hear it since the gutar and bass played totally diffrent things. I learned many of their songs and then I started switching to other bands and stuff.

I sometimes pick up my guitar and play some stuff one it. But the only things I know are stairway to heaven and underthe bridge rhcp I never really try to learn other songs since I get really bored with it. I only use guitar to well make guitar parts for songs. With my bass Im never bored. Looking for a new bass right now I found when I switch basses I come up with a cool style and some cool riffs. Thats my whole life story

Started playing guitar for 2.5 years and I guess bass for almost 1.5
