well upright bass is tuned the same way, so it will help you out there, but other than that, its a completley different instrument. The technique is a lot different than electric bass. You also play it with a bow, so you do get a little bit of expirience but other than that its completley different, and a lot harder.

I know that you can improve at the upright if you practice on an upright. The fingerings are different, but the strings are the same. The scale is quite different, and after you hit the octave G you go into thumb position. You can transfer, but it'll take time to learn. It is basically like a new instrument.

Theory will still apply the same way but the technique is a whole new ballgame.

He just means the scale as in the length of the neck, size of the fretboard etc.

It's not tuned the same way. An electric bass is tuned in fourths... (from low to high - EADG)... The doublebass is tuned in fifths (from low to high - GDAE). You also don't HAVE to play with a bow. Watch a jazz or country band...

Also, for scales, fingerings are obviously different. I used to know them, but I forgot. I really wanted to try to learn upright, but I don't have one and can't get one for less than a few grand. I'm a lefty, so I can't really find a used upright... Sucks for me! :upset:

I didnt say you had to play with a bow, but its something u cant do on electric that upright offers. And upright basses are tuned the same as electric basses. Dont know where you came up with that one (thinking of a cello possibly?)

Violins, Violas, Cellos are tuned in fifths: Violin: GDAE Viola and Cello: CGDA

Basses however (Both upright and Electric) are tuned in fourths: EADG (or variations on that BEADG, EADGC, F#BEA that's solo tuning for basses btw)
