View Full Version : How to get more than one?

How do those of you living with your parents with multiple basses convince them to let you have more than one? My dad won't even let me get a 5 string because he doesn't see a reason for it. He just doesn't understand. I wish my parents were a little more musically inclined to realize these things but it seems like theyre against everything. Anyway, how do you do it?

P.S. Yes it is with MY OWN money.

Tell them to go to hell, it's your money and you can spend it how you please.
Just make sure you have a suitcase packed if you take that route.

Tell your dad it has a can opener on it and it dispenses free money.

Or just make up a story how it will make you a better bassist and you'll go on to make millions of $$.

Then tell him you have control of what nursing home you're putting him in.

Or make a deal, like if you get honor roll all year, they'll let you buy it.

Say you'll sell one of them eventually.

say something like........in the long term it would be more "rewarding" or "advantageous" to you and your possible career as a professional bassist in the music industry. Plus tell them about the versatility.

"Dad, all these kids are trying to make me smoke pot, but I think it would interfere with playing bass."
Then about an hour later:
"This four stringer is boring."

Don't ask for anything for christmas/birthdays except a bass and/or money. That works decently well.

When I first started, it was a year before I could convince 'em I needed a new amp (in place of a crappty 10 watter) and a year and a half before a new bass. All with my own money, but they just have an 'if it's not broken, don't fix it' mindset. Now they're just kinda close minded about it (Why do you need a 6 string? Fretless? etc.)

Just talk to them, explain it. If your mom is like mine, and does scrapbooking or buys candle crap, use that as a counterpoint. If all else fails, stab them and dump their bodies in the lake.

Well seeing as my means of transportation to guitarcenter or credit card for musicians friend is via my parents none of the its my money stuff will work. If I say its my money he'll say no its my money your still a minor. and for christmas he alreayd bought me an airplane ticket to arizona for us to see my aunts so that is out. And my birthday is like 8 months from now. And...nevermind. resistance is futile.

I swear, threads like this really make me appreciate my parents. They had no problem with me getting more basses at all.

You have to make it clear to them that you are serious about playing bass and music. Once they understand that, if they accept your choices, they would let you have another bass, as they will understand it's what you truly want to do, or whatever.

"Don't forget Dad, my generation is in control of your social security."

"You know, I CAN vote in the next presidential election."

(If your dad is a military-man) "I've applied for a scholarship at Westpoint."

"I've decided to persue a life as a nudist."

or, be somewhat honest about it.

"I'm not sure if I like a 4 or 5-string better. I'm going to get the 5-string, and if I like it, I'll keep it. If not, I'll sell it back." Make sure to imply that you would sell your 4 if you like the 5.

So, for xmas I got a new bass and amp(last xmas). Well, I have been playing for 2 years almost and now I'm in a band, but I still can't use MY money to get a 5er that I would like.

are they stopping you by not driving you out to the shop? just hitch a ride and take your wallet, problem solved. If they get upset tell them that what you do with your money is your problem/responsibilty.

nah, the behringer has reached it's peak, i need more. i've bought a power amp and i'd still have enough $ to buy the p and a preamp, but i expect myself to start having car payments very soon.

Dad bought my first bass, and half paid for the next two. Anything to do with music or expressing myself and he reckons money is no object

I don't know you at all, but all my friends that weren't allowed to get neww instruments weren't allowed because they sucked and their parents knew it and were protecting them.

So- make sure you can plya REALLY WELL first, and then make sure they know you can. Then they should have no problem.

My parents wouldn't let me get a new bass (I was using a GSR200) until I played Jaco's Teen Town. Then they were kinda like, what the heck, he's pretty good, and they let me have full control of my bass-and-guitar-related expenditures.
