From the point of view of a tasteful, melodic bass player.

i'm not a fan of it either
but, if that's what he thinks that works for the music he plays then he's just doing what he feels express him.
i think he's so freaking talent and i respect him a lot even though i don't particulary like the style or his tone
I'm a fan of the fast wank stuff every now and then.

Quite a nice tone though, I heard flanger, maybe a bit of reverb but whats giving him his distortion?

I for one liked it, it kinda reminded me of how I play. Aside from all the all the odd contortions and gestures.
But yeah, it's much less a solo in the sense that we have been trained to perceive a solo. It's more like Metallica "doodles" the members will leave the stage for awhile and let one member just stay up on stage and mess around on their instrument.
EDIT: By the way, if you want a real solo check this out! (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2147027500906684022&q=sex)

I liked it. I thought it was interesting, and certainly shows how far the limits can be pushed for playing an instrument, even if it is "wankage" after all.
It also puts the Cliff Burton solo on that same Google page to shame.

He totally pwns all of us, you must admit. I for one, worship that kind of technical ability. We don't have to be groove machines people! He's got chops out the wazoo, and in a band situation he can definitely hold his own. Sheehan is one of those players that everyone loves to hate, but probably envies deep down.
His distortion is probably coming from his signature Ampeg preamp. The only downside is that it was a wee bit drawn out, and he just looks far too 80's to be taken seriously.

There are more technically proficient bassists in the world than Billy Sheehan. And plenty more who can create a listenable bass solo.
I am not impressed at all.
EDIT: I listened to all of it. The guitar/bass battle at the end had it's moments. I like the sound of Sheehan's pinch harmonics.
Now none of you can say I'm totally anti-Sheehan. :p

Of course theres such thing as an unnecessary solo. A bass solo must and always compliment the music, and if it doesn't/won't, it's not necessary and not needed. And if theres no music to begin with, like in wankfests here, theres no point to any of it.

Is there a rule book I haven't seen or something? I agree that the solo is horrible, but it's not unnecessary because it doesn't "work".

Well I don't know how long people have been playing solos on bass that sound more like guitar shredfests, but in the 1980s this was probably an uncommon thing. I think it WAS needed at the time to show non-jazz lovers that it is possible to play a whole bunch of notes very fast on bass, and that it is not for failed guitar players. Sheehan eliminated prejudice for all of the people in that audience, and for that I am grateful he did it :)

Guys, just stop it. I am sick of this "It has no groove." - OH CRAPPEDY CRAP NO!!!! NO NO NO NO NO NO!! NO GROOVE!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME??!?!?!?! CRAPPEDY CRAPELLO!!
Maybe that SOLO in itself, to you, ahd no melody in sight, but that DOESN'T MEAN SHEEHAN IS PURE WANKERY WITH NO MUSICIANSHIP! Go on his main website for christsake and listen to some soundbites of him in a groove situation.
Do not bass your enitre opinion on a man, purely through one bass solo.
VICTOR IS LIEK THE WWWANKANKL;WEJRKL;WEA RWHJIOATWNKL;AERGJKOEJKL FAWR MAN OF NO RETURN!!!
Again, listen to ALL his music, same with Sheehan!
P.S. I don't ultiamtley enjoy his tone, or his style, but I jsut need to stick up for the guy.

And to the guy saying "I'm 7 minutes in, where's the bass solo?"
You CLOSEMINDED PIECE OF DVD METAL! THAT'S RIGHT, DVD METAL!!
Stop with all this conservative traditional crap that bass is purely a backbone instrument who locks with the drummer.
It can be more than that! Pfft, drums, back in the olden days we never had symbols.
WHAT WHAT WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT!?!?! WHAT THE HELL!!!!
"Omg what! a brass insturment now has VALVES? WANKERY, WANKERY! LET'S STICK IN ONE TRADITION, COS THAT'S GREAT FOR A BUDDING MUSICIAN!"
Please people, PLEASE, open your god damn minds.

I need a life.
Cos I sit at my computer all day long getting angry because nobody loves me in life. This forum is my only source of communication and I am appreciative of your response, for without you my life may never be complete. Just sat here, nexts to the crack in the wall, the dripping ceiling where it is raining outside, the drops fall on my cheek and tears from my eyes come to join them...

I know that, I was making a COMPARISON. I know they play such different style(s??) I was just saying I preferred Wooten's because it HAS groove. IMO that solo was just wankery. Musically I did not enjoy listening to it, I'm sure some people do, and I'm not saying it's bad, but not to my taste. I did enjoy watching sheerly for the visceral pleasure of such awesome bassing.
