OK I'll confess now, I'm not into punk...at all. I like the odd Rancid but really thats as far as it goes.

BUT

I started listening to Gogol Bordello and its some of the best music I've heard, especially in party situations so a big thums up! Gogol Bordello kick arse.

So, as punkers, what music/band have you heard of totally opposite types of music have you liked?

I'm also open to all types of music, I also like rock alot, the hives, the beatles (yes that's right), Franz Ferdinand, The Pixies(great music to drum with, very easy, good for beginners), My Chemical Romance... And since they play nearly only techno at parties here in belgium I'm forced to listen to it too, although this I detest, It's just some beat, everyone can make this crap, whereas real music is hard to play if u want it too be good. Everyone should at least reconize the Beatles for what they did for music. Thinking they 'suck' is going too far and s'hitting on the contributions they made to all of rock and roll. I'll never force anyone to like anything, but I find it hard not to love the Fab Four.

No. Not everyone should like the Beatles. And I have heard many of their songs because my dad and some of my friends like them, so it's not like I'm just judging them and saying I don't like them because of their musical genre. I just simply don't like them.

Big Bad John has to be the funniest country/western song I've ever heard. Here (England) some bank or insurance firm used it for an extremely annoying advert, but they changed the words to Little Tiny Bill and the background vocs go "Lil Biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiill, lil Biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiil" and then he goes "Lil tiny Bill". It's so ANNOYING!

Although I recognise that music wouldn't be half of what it is today without them, I find their repetitiveness repulsive. Hasn't anyone noticed how they rhyme the same words over, and over in different songs? I understand that things were simpler back then, but it's like being tortured by Nazis.

But that's just my oppinion. Some people really love them. Some people love punk music. Some country, or pop. I think it has something to do with how you're accepted by others, and how you react to it now. Seeing as punks are usually outcasts of society, and pop-tarts are avidly accepted because they never do anything to break the mold. The anguish causes you to look for something more theraputic than "I love you" music, and thus, you are labeled, and begin to hate those who have it easier than you by just doing as they're expected.

You get outcasts from every walk of life and every musical genre (isn't weird how nowadays we use music to define someone without even thinking about it?), but I though punk was about being yourself and not taking sh'it about who you are and putting yourself down because someone else (or the majority of elses) is of a different opinion. That's why I'm happy to consider myself a punk without having dyed hair and a mohican, and being able to admit I like something that's decidedly 'unpunk', and why I can still be different without having to conform to the punk look, scene and usual beliefs, political and otherwise. Apart from the 'being yourself' belief, that's what punk is to me.

EDIT: Put that well thought-out opinion in your pipe and smoke it, Skrunnch (sorry, I forgot your name.) :D

You guys raised amongst you Christ returned, Buddha incarnate, Muhammed rebirthed. He tried to spread the message, he DID spread the message, but he was misunderstood in his native America, and adored and loved in Britain. He was THE guy of the 20th century. He was the one who could have changed it all, if only we'd have listened to him, and if only he hadn't had his untimely death. Though it is fitting he died so young, like he preached. So the actual topic of this thread is oppisites that you listen to compared to your main genre.. I just got that now.

If you were going to put me as a punk listener, then all the classic rock I enjoy goes in there (Beatles, Doors, Steve Miller Band, AC/DC), but you could just as easily put me a classic rock listener and all the punk I listen to is oppisite. My music tastes vary enough that there is really no oppisite to what I usually listen to, because I'll usually listen to that too.

Yeeeaahh :D

Wasn't he the deaf one who held a stick between his teeth and rested it on top of the piano which he played so he could "hear" the vibrations?

I don't know if he did the stick thing (which works), but he did have a bunh of those ear horns he'd put on the piano and keep pounding on a key until he could hear it, which was impossible in his later years. They found one of his old pianos and the ivory on the keys was worn away from his pounding.

No, that was Ray Charles:rolleyes:.
Ray Charles was blind, not deaf. I don't know if Beethoven used the stick thing, but he was awesome.

If your just going for what I like outside of the general Punk (including subgenres) genre, it would be Metal. I have just as big a collection of Metal as I do Punk, but I also like a large range of styles, these are just my main two. I'd say within the Metal genre about 60-70% of it is Death Metal.

Just a joke. And Beethoven did do the stick thing. Has anyone heard any Natasha Atlas albums? She takes so much inspiration from Pink Floyd, and if she were alive forty years ago, Pink Floyd would have transcended what we call music.

EDIT: Aw ****e! I forgot what this thread's subject was, what with the random people posting non-punk bands they like, I thought this was the confession thread. Pardon my brain's absence. *Slaps a Stupid Sticker on forehead*

I'd say I listen to a lot of punk, but nothing like I'm going to be all punk sweet.
I like punk to a certain amount, and ska is a lot better. And since I started playing bass, my musical taste has broadened a lot.

when you say ska,do you mean authentic ska or the ska /punk bands?i dont know too much about pure ska.the only band i can think of off the top of my head is the specials.that is probably the most well known ska band.and i think one step beyond is another.

Everyone should at least reconize the Beatles for what they did for music. Thinking they 'suck' is going too far and s'hitting on the contributions they made to all of rock and roll. I'll never force anyone to like anything, but I find it hard not to love the Fab Four.

The Beatles were a big part of the British Invasion, but during that time period any one with a musical instrument and a pretty face could be a star. They just got lucky, in my opinion.=/

Hmm..

Dir en Grey, the Gorillaz, Rammstein, the Rolling Stones, Sublime, and System of a Down all tickle my fancy. I don't really restrict myself to only punk music.

(from page 3) beethoven wasnt punk, he composed softer, more melodic pieces which appealed more to the mainstream, mozart (his contempory) composed far more upbeat and lively music (eg fleur elise sp.?), which appealed more to the younger audiences, hence he was much more of a punk rocker.

and i like both the dandy warhols and slipknot, but rage against the machine are my favourite band of all time.

Beethoven wrote Fur Elise, moron.

And Beethoven was much more revolutionary then Mozart, despite the styles he was writing, what he wrote was different and new then what everybody else was writing.

Also note the fact after he went deaf and nearly destroyed his paino so he could hear the notes.

I love punk but am also a massive fan of Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and Curtis Mayfield.

I also enjoy Woody Guthrie, Hank Williams, Robert Johnson, Jimi Hendrix, Chuck Berry, Gordon Lightfoot, Tom Waits, Public Enemy and large amounts of non-punk music.

Cash and Dylan are punk as **** though. Is there a more pissed-off song thatn Idiot Wind or Positively 4th Street? I don't think so.

I like goth music way more than punk music. But I can never find a band to play it in, so i get sad, which makes me like goth music even more, which perpetuates this vicious cycle.

(Love Drums)

Omg rebel for saying techno isn't music lol can't spell crap without rap lol.

Anyway, i listen to everything.

Man on the tour for Reign In Blood, they played that song last and had the sprinkler systems in the venues that had them rain red-dyed water on the crowd. F'uck me that would have been cool.
