So I was a little hesitant to post this in The Pit, but I'll just have to hope we can get some serious discussion.

We are reading To Kill A Mockingbird in my honors eng. class and one of our assignments are to find characters in the story who have the traits of a mockingbird and to back it up with a quote.

Mockingbird traits include:
-A medium-sized songbired
-outer tail is visible during flight
-Protects its nest, children.
-Can mimic sounds
-Mocks other birds' songs.
-a person who is brave strong willed, possibly a mom or dad
-a person that blends in and isn't seen as significant until it "flies"
-the person will probably have needed to prove themselves
That's all I've got, so I'm having a bit of trouble with it =/.

But so far, I've gotton Atticus Finch as one, because he is well respected, and is defending a "negro" in a rape case, which was unheard of. "Miss Jean Louise, stand up. Your father's passin'." He will do anything to protect his family.

So if any of you have read it/are familiar with it..help a brotha' out :)

I also am in honors English. Sucks, eh?

We're doing that book too, next term. Right now we're doing 1984. I finished most of To Kill a Mockingbird, but i got tired of it and said, "**** it," and quit. (we were supposed to read both books over the summer.)

Wow, we had to read that in freshman year in high school... High school, I say.

It's a great book, but Gregory Peck is the man. (had to watch the video as well)

In the end it's that wierd kid that never comes out of the house. Not the old one, the young one.

Because whoever says, 'It's a sin to kill a mockingbird, cuz they never did anything to noone,' thus, it's not right to do anything or persecute him for anything, because he's never hurt anyone.

That book sucked.

I usually even enjoy the books we're meant to read for English, but I couldn't even finish this one.

Well Boo Radley is one of them, but we are supposed to find as many examples of characters with mockingbird traits as we can

I liked that book, the movie sorta put me to sleep in class. Give your guitar and I'll tell you answers.

It starts of pretty slow, but when it gets to the trial its all on. I enjoyed it for the most part but would say its a bit overrated. I guess it had a lot to do with the time and circumstances it came out in that made it such a renowned book.

For the thread starter - A big theme in the book is apperance and reality (i.e. things aren't always as they seem. Boo Radley, the elderly neighbour (forgot her name) and Tom Robinson are all talked about by residents of Maycomb in negative ways because of the immediate impression you get from them whereas the truth is there is a deeper and harder to accept meaning for their actions.

Tom hasn't done anything against Bob Ewell or that Wh0re Child of his, and he is getting "killed".

Most of the characters in the novel show "Mockingbird Traits", its just that they aren't as significant as the main characters.

Me too. But the whole class had to read that book regardless of being Honors or College Prep. Honors had to read an extra book while reading TKAM.. I got stuck with Fahrenheit 451.

That was a good book.

If I remember anything to help you out threadstarter, I will. But I read that book 2 years ago. So I don't remember much.
