I need help with upgrading my computer.
I was trying to run half life 2 earlier, which.... yeah, kinda sucked, well not kinda, but sucked ***.
Anyways, I need a new motherboard. I know that much
I was thinking of this.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ASUS-A8N-SLI-Motherboard-SATA-RAID-AMD-Socket-939-DDR_W0QQitemZ6818316437QQcategoryZ99245QQrdZ1QQcmd ZViewItem
And this graphic card right here
GeForce 6800
Help? Suggestions?
I want something decent enough to at least run my half life 2 very smoothly and make my computer more multi-taskable.
Just gimme info or something, I am really computer illiterate :(

That is a good motherboard, but we can't do much without your Processor info and more GPU info such as AGP or PCIE. Make sure it's all compatible, also upgrading your motherboard isn't as important as say processor or gpu.

Well, to upgrade a processor, you need a motherboard that's compatible.

What processor do you have.
Be more specific with what video card you have.
Hell, list your full specs.
We cannot help you with anything unless we know these things.

Go for a Socket 939 AMD. Most expensive you can possibly get.

Biggest thing for HL:2 is going to be memory and video card. I recomend Radeon 800gxt...it will set you back a bit of money, but it is definitly worth it. Memory, probably up to a gig wouldnt hurt.

Also if he plans on keeping any of his current parts, and if so, which ones.

Thats only true if you have a decent processor already. If not, thats the important thing. You could have all the memory and GPU power in the world, but the processor cant handle it, say good bye to the game!

The only thing about that motheroard is the Realtek audio, I recommend upgrading to Creative Labs. Realtek is very buggy and it sucks when your record.

How do I see my full specs?
Control Panel > System > General
That will tell you about the CPU and RAM.
There is also a program called Everest that will pretty much tell you everything.

Judging by your specs if you want to play games like HL2 the best thing you can do is get new everything to go along with your new motherboard. In fact I would say you most likely have to get new everything, pretty much. How much do you have to spend? Almost anything will be an improvement. Not that what you have is so bad, but it's a really basic office work/email kind of machine. Not really for gaming at all. How much money can you invest in this "upgrade".
EDIT: I'm not certain about this. Perhaps you just need more RAM and a video card. For those who are familiar with AMD, how is his processor?

As much as it takes, I will just get piece by piece. I am going to save 1K dollars first though and get the MAJOR parts.

There. That program will tell you everything you need to know.
Judging by what you have there, you're probably going to need a new system for games like HL2.

Not very good.
What, if any, video card do you have?
EDIT: for $1000 you could probably put together a decent system. The one I'm using now cost less than that a year ago and it runs HL2 pretty well.

All for around $1000, give or take. You'll play games extremely well with this. It's actually more computer then you need to play games decently. This is a pretty good rig. But if you don't want to spend so much, you don't have to. If I were in the market, this would make me happy for sometime to come.

No. Your current hardware is not compatible with the motherboards you have been considering. Wouldn't make a difference if they were compatible.
If you want more multi-tasking capabilities, I would recommend getting any Athlon64 X2 processor. They have dual core processing which speeds things up really nicely and makes everything run really smoothly.

$20 says your power supply isn't enough to support the stuff you're going to be buying.
Get a TrueBlue 550w .... that will be plenty sufficient. It's like $150 I think
