This is a very stupid question but I need to make sure I am right. Does the heavier hi hat go on the bottom and the light on top. This is what I always thought how it went but recently I noticed when I hit my hats with my sticks the light hat is pushed back and I am actually hitting the inside of the heavey one.
you need to adjust the angle of the bottom cymbal so they come together cleanly. And yes the heavier one does go on the bottom.

You can also modify your hat sound by putting the heavier hat on top. This gives you a "heavier" sound, and is good for diversing your hat sound and for hard rock.

for a clean chick sound the light one goes on top. or like those gadd session hats, a heavier top gives it more 'ridability'

You can use them both ways, I know gadd's hats always have the heavier on top. Try switching em around to see what you like.

There is no right or wrong way to do it. It's all preference in sounds.

i think hes asking if theres a standard. no standard. however, trendwise, its top light bottom heavy
It usually says right on the cymbals anyway. They are designed for the top/ light, bottom/ heavy use but that's not a rule.
