BIG UPDATE - i'm all done scroll down to where i have everything set up!!
---------------------------
this is straight from my myspace.com/azndui blog "my hands are sticky". i post most of my progress on myspace now :)
[quote]
so i went to go do some quick work on my kit. including some more spraying of the hardware and adding the final coating of polyurethane to my 16" floor tom and trying to do a fade for the second time (this time both shades were still wet..i learned
the thing is the fade is dark walnut and ebony so u cant really tell yet..)
i opened an old can of poly on accident and that shyt was rock solid. after i put a coat of super thick poly on the tom i realize i opened the wrong can..
enjoy the pics everyone, ill post more blogs to show my progress and should be done by saturday. its taking awhile cuz i gotta study for exams..

so you used a paint brush and it came out smoothly? or did you use anything to make a smooth final product?

its rustoleum so it will last a bit longer, but true, its gonna come off in a few months. ill have my catalina birches by then

yeah i did all the polyurethane and staining with brushes. i just dont trust my hands very much
oh and u guys may not be able to tell, but iv made MUCH more progress in my next 2 attempts at fades. the snare i now learned that dark walnut and ebony dont go well together, and to add another coat of walnut in the middle will only quadruple the problem, lol. on the 12" tom i tried the fade again, but this time with natural oak (my dogs spilled my sedona red u guys have been seeing on my last attempts). enjoy!

My personal opinion is what i dont like it.
I think it would have looked alot better with just a gloss over the wood, as that colour in the middle is really nice.

11-10-2005, 03:52 PM
the color in the middle isnt the natural color..

ok so oyu can like run your hand down the side and you wont feel any bumps? I jsut dont see how a paintbrush iwll make it like that. Nice job thoguh, i like it. I like the title too.

I think the bass drum looks the best, in the last pic it looks as if it has a pretty decent fade. I got a couple of questions: wouldn't it be easier to create a fade by using air brushes? also, did you try to attenuate the color with turpentine or some other kind of paint thinner?

The finished floor tom alone didn't look very promising but when you put that set together, it actually looks pretty cool. And definately unique. Good job.
edit: if you want a smooth fade, you gotta use airbrush or spray. I doubt no-one can make a smooth fade with brushes.

Hmmm... I remeber when you first started this a while ago told you I didn't like it and the color was crap. Even though its not a proper fade, damn it looks pretty good when the I see the finished product with the entire kit set up. The black hardware makes it look even nicer, even tho it won't last. Correct me if Im wrong but if you scuff the metal before painting doesn't it make the paint take to it more so it will last? Or is that only when you get stuff powder coated? Either way it looks good, and I would like to take back my previous comments.:thumb:
EDIT: What is the tom to the far left is it an 8"?

I like it a lot. It looks very well done when set up with the entire kit. I suppose it's all a matter of taste, but I like it.

lemme see if i can answer everything :)
the far right is a 10" tom
no, i cant get 100% smooth final product with brushes, lots of sanding, but i think i got kind of close
i only used stain, polyurethane, and to try the fade i used a tiny bit of water and countless little brush strokes
the aax looks dusty cuz i never clean it, its supposed to be a dark crash so i kinda aid it. i might need to clean it anyway later
thnx for the comments everyone! i might get a 14x12 and just refinish that and the 10x8 in the same way to get em matching :)

It looks more like a jagged stripe than a fade. To achieve a true fade, I think you probably are better off using sprays (at least that's how I did my concert toms).
That being said, it definitely looks unique and eye-catching. Nice work.

If that what trying to be a fade, it was a miss. Personally it looks like its a fade thats not finished yet, it looks unfinished.
