I wish Tobias' were more readily available so that I could try one out.
I also wish they were cheaper

You know what's weird? musicyo.com used to sell those basses waaaay too cheap.
A friend of mine has one, it costed him about 400 bucks and it was brand new. The thing plays absolutely amazing, and while it is a bit neck heavy, the construction of it is amazing. You can slap and pop pretty nicely. The sound of it was also VERY bassy and VERY cool...
I loved it and he traded that bass for a 5-er that is also a Tobias!

maybe 4 of us could put in about $540 a piece and we could each play it for a couple months and mail it to the next person!! We could all play it once a year:thumb:

They MusicYo ones are the Korean built lower end ones. I own one. I love it and it plays great and sounds great too, but it isnt a patch on the American built Tobias'. The American ones are hand built i think and use exotic woods which the Korean ones certainly dont.

I own a Tobias 6 String Toby Pro. It's the Korean model and cost me about $900. I think it plays better than the actual American ones. But the Korean Models are more pot luck in how they are shipped to you. Still its a far better make than Tanglewood or Shine. THose Korean BAsses are just the worst I have seen. Plays great and it has a sweet tone. Its not rough normally but if you crank up the treble it gets real dirty as in "a touch metal"! Ease the treble off to just above half way and put the bass to match and you have a funky tone for slapping and poppping and some general funk. It is quieter than a lot of basses but that does not matter if you have the amp to power it as you just turn it up to comensate. Still if you are running your bass through a small amp then dont buy one as they are not powerful enough and all that sweet tone will be overpowered by your band mates.

Just my opinion here, but here goes:
Tobias is a company that used to be owned by Michael Tobias. It was bought out by Gibson, and went to crap. MTD is Michael Tobias' new company, and it is infinitely better. So, to sum up:
Tobias: :(
MTD: :)

I assumed we were talking about MTD the whole time. Oh snap. I may have just supported....Gibson! AHH!!!

I think they kinda suck, for how much they cost. I've played one of their 2200 dollar models, and it played and sounded like a 900 dollar bass at best. It was a pretty boring bass to play.

No definitely not... but when they buy up good companies and turn their products from great pieces of work to absolute garbage, than yes, I consider that to be something wrong. To me they're sort of the Wal-Mart of the music industry.

Yes and no. At one point, they were the cream of the crop, but it seems they've sacrificed quality for quantity over the years.
I've just never been a fan of their basses though.

I'm sorry but its badge culture going on here. The Korean Model basically has such sweet tone and its brilliant. Only thing is its a touch quiet unless you have about a 200w amp to power it. Just as good as £2000 models. Your just being silly about it. Its all the same stuff. Now real crap is stuff like Shine or Tanglewood. Now that there is utter crap. I owned both and they suck balls.
