If anyone knows the Porcupine Tree song "Hatesong" (and if you don't, you should) would they care to help me out with something? I've got basically all the song down (except for a few of Colin's crazy fills) but the harmonics are driving me nuts. I'm wondering if this song isn't played in a tuning different than standard because I can't seem to figure out what harmonics he's playing (on the very beginning riff)...I just suck at harmonics.

Anyway this song is quite a fun one to play and I haven't found any tabs for it anywhere so I think the internet could use one.

It's just straight harmonics down the 4th and 5th frets, on the G and D strings in standard.

All he plays for that little fill are the first three notes and the keyboardist plays those last two notes, but if you're curious those harmonics are as follows:

G-----------4--------
D--5--4--------3.2---
A--------4-----------

As for the tuning, Collin seems to play in Drop D for a lot of the songs. Hope this helps. :)

Drop D, eh?

In that case I'd screw around with some cool harmonic diads.

G------------------4--------
D--5---4-------------3.2---
A-----------4----------------
D--5---4---3.2--5---------

That's pretty cool; you got like a Dmaj7th chord outline goin' there. :)

Man, I love Maj7 chords. I'm always playing patters like:

(preferrably Amaj7/C#) - Gives a nice eerie, yet calm kind of feel by octaving the 3rd.
|-|-|-|-|O|
|-|-|O|-|-|
|-|-|-|O|-|
|O|-|-|-|-|

or

(preferrably Gmaj7/F#) - Really chipper and upbeat if played from bottom string to top (thick to thin). Feels like a happy love song type of thing.
|-|-|O|-|-|
|O|-|-|-|-|
|-|-|-|-|O|
|-|-|-|-|-|

or

(no preference) - A more mellow, melodic, happy feel.
|-|O|-|
|-|-|O|
|O|-|-|
|-|-|-|

I know what you mean, I like major 7th chords too. :)

If I play a pattern or the chord itself I usually play something like this:
|-|-|O|
|-|-|O|
|-|-|-|
|O|-|-|

or

|-|-|O|
|O|-|-|
|-|O|-|
|-|-|-|

:)

Edit: Just realized that the my second one is pretty much the same thing as your first one.:p

When I saw them back on Oct 21st he was using a black Musicman Bongo; sounded pretty damn sweet. :)

Yeah. I use that pattern too, but IMO it sounds so mych cooler with an octave of the third.
