I cannot do this. I hit all the strings and it sounds like crap. Uless the band is really loud and I mute all the strings except the one im playing then it may work. What am I not doing right? Am supposed to strum like on a guitar [lift had past all and back down all] or am I supposed to magicly hit one string. Or am I supposed to put my hand in one spot? Also where should I stum I mean with a pick and playing at the bridge it sounds REALLY high. Help.

Keep your hand over the strings and use a wrist motion...

That covers most things to do with pickery.

Hit one string at a time.

if your only playin one note u just hit that string. strumming is more for guitar, unless ur actually playing chords on bass(which i doubt u are)

ur should pick where ever good for you... but the closer tho the bridge the more treble closer to the neck more bass.

I'm guessing someone just deleted my post.

Anyways, just practice picking each individual string. If you really aren't doing well at it, get one of your guitarist friends to help you.

I use my fingers normally but I liked the look of some bands I saw when the drummer was stumming not just moving your wrist and they were playing one string. I can't get it...

The drummer?

Assuming you mean bassist, odds are they were just playing the E-string. Or they were faking the whole thing anyway.

So your only learning to use a pick because it looks cool? Right......

Report to your local post office and send me your bass.

i just rest my hand on the bridge and strum with my wrist...you cant do the whole arm thing and just hit one string(unless its the E string) so just use ur wrist

Play guitar if you want to look cool. Once you get over the wanting to feel cool stage and realise you look like just another idiot, then come back and learn how to use a pick properly.

When I Play, I Play chords on My Bass... but really try to play as close to the bridge as you can as long as you are getting a good sound.

The tighter the strings the easier it is to pick.

Ive Only Picked One Song Live and that was "Spin" by Lifehouse, and it wasnt easy, at all, pick players got it rough sometimes i mujst say.Its Easier to Play Guitar with a Pick for me, with Bass, its a pain in the ***... and i play both.

Im Sorry, im a pretty GOOD bassplayer. But I Do Like to Play infront of a mirror, because a Good Band Entertains the Crowd with more then music, and im not talking gimmicks either, im talking about moving around, and feeling the music, and having a good time, and sometimes if i do something on stage, i want to see what i look like doing it, if i see it make sme look bad i never doit again...

but hey I forgot this is MX where all the BAss Players are wootenesque, and can play complex tunes, and dont need to dance around.

I used To play Guitar but now i play bass and i play everything with a pick with the exception of slap. I personally find it easyier to play with a pick and it makes a fuller/heavy sound when using a pick. Just Keep practicing picking techniques and excersices and you will get it:thumb:

Just practise.

Using a pick really isn't that hard.

Joz made a picking guide, and I'm assuming that that's the link that Wintermute provided for you.

I don't really agree with your wanting to learn it to because of the main reason of you think it's cool, but to each their own. I have nothing against it.

When I used a pick I had the same problem, it always looked like they were magically going through the strings and only hitting one- that's not what they're doing whatsoever, unless they're playing chords. You need to learn the PROPER way to use a pick, first, and after much practice you'll be accurate enough to take broad motions.

You must be attacking the **** out of your bass then.

its just hard to do the fast pick muting with my fingers you can do it by resting your pinky on the string youre playing on right by the bridge, and play with your middle/index normally... it gives a good muted tone.

indeed.

also i dont see any problem if he wants to learn to do that cos he thinks it looks cool, its his choice.
