View Full Version : Diary Of A Madman: Ozzy Osbourne
Britton

I had wanted to make a Jimi Hendrix Thread but someone beat me to it.
So the next most deserving person in my opinion would be Ozzy. Being as
though there are so many gay threads regaurding him. So this one is
for you Ozzy fans. This is where you talk about the madman.
Here is a write. Provided by Geo city
John Michael «Ozzy» Osbourne is born in Birmingham December the 3rd 1948.
Jack and Lillian Osbourne is his parents. John was the fourth of six children
in a small home at 14 Lodge Road in Aston, England. Ozzy's father worked
nights in a steel plant while his mother worked days in an Autoshop .
His family was very poor. They had no money, no car and little food.
In his spare time, Ozzy would watch television. He liked shows such as "I love Lucy",
"Lassie" and "Roy Rogers". For the Osbourne family it was lot of work and little time
to enjoy there sparetime.
In school, other students called John, "Ozzie" or "Oz-brain".
Ozzy wore a rebel, but he did take part in school plays, such as H.M.S. Pinafore,
The Mikado and The Pirates of Penzance. There was one student at school
named Tony Iommi that Ozzy did'nt get along with. Tony and his mates would make
fun of Ozzy's high voice and compared his singing to a girl.
The two of them would later meet each other later on other circumstances.
Ozzy did not do particularly well in school and wanted to get out as soon
as he could. Ozzy was kicked out from school. His parents argued often,
because of their money problems. Ozzy started to steal and break in to houses,
but got caught. He sat in prison where he tattooed him self with a smiling face on his knees,
so the first thing he saw in the morning is a smiling face.
He also got his nickname tattooed on his fingers.
When Ozzy where young he wanted to become a plumber,
but when he heard the Beatles he wanted to become a beetle.
He joined his first band at the age of 14, later Ozzy and Geezer Butler started a band,
but needed more members. Geezer got Bill Ward on drums and Tony Iommy on guitar and they
formed the band Polka Tulk. Later they changed their band name to Earth and later to Black Sabbath
Members of Black Sabbath:
Tony Iommy - Lead guitar
Ozzy Osbourne - Vocals
Bill Ward - Drums
Geezer Butler - Bass
Ozzy left Black Sabbath while they were making Never Say Die. When Ozzy left Tony Iommy got a new singer.
Rhonny James Dio from the group DIO, Black Sabbath kept going on under Tony Iommy and are still going strong.
Ozzy started his solo carrier with his friend and guitarist Randy Rhoads and gave out the album Blizzard Of Ozz.
The album sold to dobbel - platina and got some songs on it that went into music history.
Ozzy married his manager Sharon Osbourne same year as the album came out.
When Ozzy went on stage first time with The Blizzard Of Ozz tour he felt so nervous
before he walked up and down the street outside his house. But Sharon helped him and the concert was a hit.
Ozzy became a live favourite, because of his yelling and screaming to the audience.
On the shows people threw things on the stage, like plastic bats and dead animals.
One time someone threw a real bat at him and he bit the head of it,
because he thought it was a plastic bat. He collapsed and lied in the hospital several days
before he could perform again. Ozzy became a alcoholic and he went on cocaine for many years.
But Sharon sent him to a center for alcoholics and he got dry after several visits.
His guitarist, Randy Rhoads, died in a private airplane crash 23 years old.
«He was my best friend and the best musician he had ever known» is the words written by
Ozzy in the cover of Tribute(6). Ozzy is well known for is skills to find young and
excellent guitar players, and so he did. Jack E. Lee was the next guitarist and he played on
Bark At The Moon, Ultimate Sin, Just Say Ozzy and No Rest For The Wicked. Jake E. Lee quit the
band and Zakk Wylde took over the guitar. He has played with Ozzy since No More Tears.
Ozzy has started his own record label, Ozz records, and got many famous names on it. Like: Silverchair.
"Ultimately, the only thing I've ever done right in my life is make music,"
says Ozzy Osbourne. "I don't know anything else."

where as Randy is kinda like a Pop Metal...a lot cleaner sounding more
polished...er something to the effect

He was just a singer right? Or did he write stuff for Black Sabbath and his solo stuff? I was always under the impression that his guitarist's/other musicnas wrote the stuff.

The only Sabbath CD's I have are We Sold Our Souls for Rock and Roll (it's a greatest hits CD) Reuinion, and Paranoid. But I have like 7 Ozzy CD's.
I think Diary of a Madman (the album) has Randy's best work. Diary of a Madman is also my favorite Ozzy song. My fav. Black Sabbath song is Into the Void.
he has wrote some
really good lyrics
I read somewhere that he couldnt write lyrics, cause of his dyslexia.

Ozzy's solo career fell apart when Randy died.

sabbath did not get back on track until ozzy rejoined black sabbath. i know there is goinga be a lot of people who are going to disagree with me when i say this. ozzy was black sabbath. also ozzy got maried in 1982. also it was zakk wyde who did no rest for the wicked. randy died when he was 25 in the plane crash.

The Osbournes destroyed his career (so much so that i can't even spell it:p )
Ozzy's solo career fell apart when Randy died.

I hate Randy's tone even though everyone seems to love it, and it's really very few people I've ever heard say anything bad about him. I don't think he's a bad player or everything, I guess I'm just not hearing what everyone else is.

Woah.. I don't know how they turned that event into those kind of lyrics. I don't even think it hints at them and an encounter with Skinheads. I always figured it was about Ozzy getting high as hell on some hallucinogen or something.
Ozzy is so cool. Probbably my favourite singular artist of the 80's. When he left Sabbath, he effectively signed a blank cheque for himself, he's litterally worth that much.
Anyhow.
Favourite songs: (On occasion)
Breakin' All The Rules, Bark At The Moon (Nostalgically silly reasons), Hellraiser, Thunder Underground, Over The Mountain and Flying High Again.

Ozzy's always been good. He has a very unique voice. Not a lot of range or power, but you kind of need his voice to sing his songs.
Also, There is a lot of talk that Ozzy wrote very little. Bob Daisley (the bass player) is supposed to have wrote most of his solo stuff, the lyrics at least.
I prefer his solo stuff with Randy Rhoads. Randy was incredible.

I have tried to like Ozzy Osbourne's music, I bought a few of his albums "Blizzard of Ozz" "Live" and a few others. I just can't get into music, it sounds really cheesy to me, I guess that would be the easiest way to describe it from my point of view.
I have also tried to like Black Sabbath, but I just can't get into them. I listened to War Pigs and a few other big songs they have released. Both bands just aren't my type of music...
I have always found Ozzy's vocals somewhat annoying also, but oh well. I love metal music, but I can't really take Ozzy/Sabbath.

I do that with more than just Ozzy, I figured since everyone was recommending Ozzy to me, might as well go buy an album and maybe the music would grow on me, but it never did.
I did the same with Pantera, couldn't get into them at all either, but I went and bought their greatest hits album just incase I might find something interesting that my grab my attention and bring me into the band more, but nothing there either.

That solo is amazing. Zakk was and is a great guitarist. It's not a longer version, it's just the studio outtake of randy when he was working out the idea in his head onto tape. You can tell he was a perfectionist because of the number of times he restarts dee.

Fixed.
Anyways, yeah that's a good cd to get. That whole cd is a bunch of live stuff with Randy. He was so excellent at guitar is not even funny.
The impromptu solo that he does during Suicide Solution is amazing.
I forget what song but Lee Kerslake does an amazing drum solo as well.
Anyone else here liked the Randy Rhodes version of Paranoid and Children of the Grave more than the original sabbath version?

Actually that is Tommy Aldridge with the drum solo on Steal Away(The Night). Lee played on both Ozzy/Randy studio albums though.
Yes, I do like the way Randy jammed the Sabbath tunes much more than what was played on the originals. Randy totally smoked them and made them much more interesting IMO!

It's funny how he talks on that. He was incredible in the studio! the sounds
and tones he got are so beautifull....crazy train is Metal...but it's so polished
even his pick slides sound clean and clear.
I love his work. He took some great Sabbath songs and cleaned them up.

Oh thanks. Ozzy had a thing about not being able to play well with others.:p
Too many line up changes IMO.
I finally printed out the tabs to Dee, but of course they sound wrong.

Hahaha ,
I have that problem with speaking. I know exactly what I want to say but it sounds like all garbled.
The tribute album is awesome and is well worth the buy. I probably would've just been a cheap bastard and got it on ebay, but new is always > used.
I finally found decent tabs to Dee, (not on mxtabs like I thought that they would have) so I am currently learning that. I used to play it for my mom and she thought that was and awesome thing to play. She doesn't know who wrote it and I don't think she even cares, but absolutely loves it when I play it. I forgot how to play it and she got bummed out. Kinda funny huh?

Which do you all prefer Ozzy's work with Sabbath or his solo work?
Both. He is great in either, and I love all of his work.
You may want to edit the first post so it's not so confusing to read.

Well I've been gone for most of that month.:p
Anyways, I decided to go back over some of my ozzy cd's again and I've rediscovered my love for NRFTW.
It's Zakk's debut and it reminded me of how he came from nothing, yet became a huge icon in rock guitar. After listening to his amazing chops on Miracle Man and Crazy Babies, it's small wonder.
That awesome arpeggio sh*t that he does in Miracle Man just gives me goosebumps all over.:thumb:

Can someone please tell me which Ozzy song that is where,
It starts off with the high E string I believe ...
mostly 1st and 2d frets... I believe they are at least some of them... Pinch harmonics...
I'd recignize it if I heard it...
Pretty fast.
Anyone know which song I'm talking about?

Hey guys in this months issue of Guitar world there are several articles about Randy Rhoads. Even if you aren't a guitarist I would recomend you picking it up.

sry i havent been here b4, didnt no there was an ozzy thread!!
randy rhoads is the reason i play guitar. when i first heard crazy train on the radio i was like, ok im learnin that. he's my hero bc he can tastefully incorporate classical into metal. sure u got this neoclassical stuff, and its fun to listen to & respect but its too fast for my liking. besides, randy and yngwie are the ones who simultaneously invented it!!
about ozzy's voice- i love it. yes i no most people cant stand it, but really- he has a great range, and he hits the right notes. his voice matches sabbath's mood perfectly, and the dio stuff just isnt the same.
lyrics- OMG!!! sometimes they make sense, sometimes they dont, and i can always connect with them. i wish he would write more songs about love though. he writes a lot about hurt, which is a good lyrical topic...
when he was with randy, the 2 of them would write the lyrics together. ozzy always comments about how patient randy was with him, and it brought out the best of him. i agree, the randy songs are the best. zakk wylde is awesome. (rock on bls!!) i'd have to say my favorite wylde album is no more tears- the album got me through a hard time.
my favorite album of all time is diary of a madman. i have to mention lee kerslake goes absolutely crazy too...
favorites:
rhoads: crazy train, over the mountain, and diary of a madman are my top 3 although flying high, little dolls, mr crowley, suicide solution, steal away, ok im gonna stop b4 i name all of em
non-rhoads: mama im coming home, see you on the other side, time after time, no more tears, gets me through, rock & roll rebel
ill be back :chug:

it's a pretty well d0cumented fact
ozzy saw an ad of a band looking for a singer, he went to tony iommis house, said "i have a pa" and that was pretty much it
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I bought "Black Sabbath the Last Supper" DVD, and they talk about how the band started. I'm pretty sure that the situation arised that Ozzy's band broke up, around the same time as Iommi's. Then Ozzy put up an add saying something to the effect of "Ozzy Osbourne, singer, looking for band" and of course, Iommi already knew Ozzy, (although only by his original name) and I think it was Iommi who approached Ozzy. and that they basically merged their two bands together, and later picked up Bill Ward for drums. I'll double check on that in the next few days, but thats what I took from the DVD. It's been a while though, I might be wrong.
