View Full Version : Glaring Genre-Label Mistakes

I was playing bass while watching TV earlier, so I decided to see what was on some channels. I passed by MTV and heard, "...this year's new emo rockers, Fall Out Boy..." Bemused and laughing to myself, I decided to watch for a second. Fall Out Boy was on MTV for a few seconds, and I said to myself, "Whatever, who cares? We all know Fall Out Boy isn't even close to emo..."
So then I decide to go to OnDemand music channels and see what was good. I went to Havoc and saw "From First to Last." I decided I could use a laugh, so I read the description for the video "Note to Self." It was as follows (completely unedited):
Screamo: the perfect fusion of rock, screaming, anger & deep lyrics. From First to Last when you're angry, nostalgic, sad, or depressed. Song "Note to Self"
Ignoring the second phrase isn't anything close to a sentence or a rational thought altogether, I decided enough was enough. Calling FFTL "screamo" is just a slap in the face to real screamo bands and fans, and their music is certainly not "angry," the lyrics are certainly not "deep" (oh come on, read them, now! :p)
Discuss.
Or, talk about another time when something "emo, hardcore," or "screamo" was mislabeled terribly.
!
This isn't a "omfg bash fftl/[insert anotner generic band here]," but just give me your input on situations like this, or another situation.

I'm thinking of sending Mtv and other such media affiliates angry letters.

it gets to me because dont you think that Fall Out Boy(being the musicians that they are) would know that they arent emo, and to tell everyone that there not? im starting to believe that alot of these bands that call themselves emo, have no clue about the music. and that even us MX'ers are more knowledgable about the genre than they are...
Things like this have happened too many times to even mention.
Yes, namely from MTV.
At first I found the ignorance slightly humorous. Now I just find it insulting.
Not much you can do though.
I don't have MTV.
We all agree with each other so why do we need these threads? We're just saying the same things as before.

I think thats wrong though, becuase bands know what they are, what kind of music they make and all. Once they get labeled one way, unless theres a drastic change, where all the media starts to label them different, theres really nothing they can do to get their fans to call them different.

Atreyu
Post Hardcore / Metal / Rock
i was logging into myspace and that was the featured band and their genre discription. my anger is beyond reason of atreyu considering themselves in the same league as trophy scars.

I only hate it when people I know say I am making things up when I call fallout boy pop or pop-punk.
I don't care what tv does, just when people live by it word for word.

Calling Aerosmith or AC/DC metal is ridiculous. Guns N Roses I can understand (although it's not quite accurate either), but those first two are just plain old rock.
I know this doesn't fit in with the "mislabeled as emo" thing, but this is what I have noticed :)

The point is whether or not it should. Murders SHOULDN'T happen, but they do. I know that's an extreme comparison, and I'm not saying that calling bands like My Chemical Romance "emo" is like murder, but the idea is there...just because something shouldn't be done doesn't mean it will be followed.
Also, this wasn't a "omfg im gunna bytch el oh el" thread, it was more of a "*sigh* I found this funny...what do you guys think?" thread...
Got a little out of hand...eh...oh well.
