Show them wikipedia's definition for emo and for the post-hardcore thing I dont know what to tell you. People are like this at my school and this happens to me a lot. People dont belieive me when I tell them emo is an abbreviation for emotional-hardcore and that tbs, fallout boy, and mcr arent emo.

Actually, it's correct, because it says those bands aren't actually emo, they are just playing off emo's influence.

It's just sort of irritating that when you try to educate these sorts of people they basically just ignore you or don't get it.

That's the general consensus among kids like that. It's great that they appreciate their own music. But it irks me that every time I have actually tried to give them some sort of information on it they'd rather remain ignorant about it.

So what I mean is that I dislike most of these kids because they are pretty ignorant even when you try to reason with them; they'd rather not learn about what the genres actually mean and would prefer to make things up to suit their relative clique.

I would never want actual emo to get into the mainstream. It's the same with hardcore. If hardcore was ever mainstream to the point of like radio airplay, it would kill hardcore completely.

Your avatar is the greatest thing ever. I miss that ad, and I miss Crossfire. A friend of mine had it, but him and his brothers lost all the pieces because they would just whip them at eachother.

Anyway, to stay on topic, it's a common misconception. I didn't even really know the distinction until recently. I mean, I knew the bands that everyone was calling emo were not real emo, but beyond that I knew nothing.

Educate them. If they don't want to listen, it's their loss.

I've had plenty of people ask about my music, and when I try to explain it, they just don't care or don't get it. I've had a rare few actually learn a lot from me.

claudio is the one reason i can't get into them. they are really talented musically though.

and with educating people on emo, I don't even bother. I just go along with everyone else, and make fun of emo. I find it hilarious to stereotype emo kids cause I know thats not what emo really is. Thats why I find this http://emosong.ytmnd.com/ so funny. (btw there is a video of it which is ****ing hilarious.) I don't give a **** about genres anymore, i just listen to music that I think sounds good. I think this basically sums up what I think...

As the old proverb says, "History is written by the victors," and it remains to be seen which version of the genre will be accepted as the popular consciousness of "emo".

except it's obvious that the mainstream definition of emo is going to be known by the vast majority of people, so just deal with it. at least when people were misrepresenting punk, punk was already seen as a rebellious kind of music, but with emo it's already considered whiney, depressing, pussy, soft whatever you want to call it. so then screamo was made to differenciate, but now that term has been ruined too, so just call it hardcore.

The same thing is going on at my school. People think MCR is considered emo along with a handful of other bands you mentioned.

Fortunatly, there are some people that know what REAL emo is. Most of them do listen to what the mainstream labels as "emo" but they do know the difference between the two, and some enjoy both.

Me being one of these people myself. I enjoy FFTL, Underoath etc.. but I also enjoy Circle Takes The Square, Saetia, Trophy Scars, and that sort of thing.

People take one look at me and they assume I like MCR, Senses Fail, Taking Back Sunday and that crap. When in reality, I hate them all.

Just ignore them. You know you're right, and that's all that matters.

I would just ignore them, you know what you're talking about, they don't.

exactly. debating that stuff on the internet is different than real life. being a genre-nazi in real life is just going to make you look like a tool. on here you can give links, history, and have people to back you up. in real life, you are just saying, that band isn't this, this band (that they have never heard of) is, and it gets you no where. you look to all of them as stupid as they look to you, its pointless.

I never bothered actually explainging what it was to him, since he has no knowledge of any of the genres emo is rooted in. If i said it was based from hardcore, he still wouldnt know what im talking about, and if i named some emo bands, most people still wouldnt know.

the reason we buy products from china here in america because they make it cheap and thats all that matters to most of the people here. and though the reason arnold schwarzenegger (or however the hell you spell it) is governor is sort of messed up he hasnt ruined the state yet and california is doing pretty fine so he isnt doing a terrible job and finally george bush got re-elected because of very large consevatist right in this country and mr. bush played right into that demographics hands.

An emo kid writes in his journal:

me cause he caught me in my mom's makeup again. He's such a nazi. I wish i could just run away to somewhere where people could understand me. I make out with one guy at a show and I'm gay? Hello, it's the new millenium. Ever heard of experimentation? I tried to cut my wrist yesterday but some of the blood got on my pants, and I totally freaked. Needless to say, they're ruined."

That was from a song called '**** emo' by cheap sex.

You're a moron.

As far as I know, metal/punk/alternative music was never meant to be mainstream. Any band that is played on MTV is sure to get popularity, that's why people call most of the bands they air as sellouts.

Metal/Punk bands giving their videos over to MTV would destroy the genre. It would no longer be a cool underground thing.

Have any of you ever seen any REAL punk videos on MTV? Exactly.

Unfortunately, the same thing is happening to Fuse. Fuse has gained a lot of popularity, very quickly. It's good that they show only music videos, and not reality show crap.

But, I go to school and I hear about morons and how they're into Fuse. Fuse is now the COOL thing, as was MTV so many years ago. Most of the bands aired on Fuse are getting just as much attention as if they were on MTV.

Anyone with a Satellite dish can watch Fuse. What makes the people that watch it one step ahead of everyone? I hardly watch it anymore.
