holla back if you like Ayreon. I personally think they are one of the best prog groups out there. I never have seen them talked about on these boards. I have The Final Experiment, The Human Equation (1 and 2), The Universal Migrator (1 and 2). Does anyone hear know/like them?

i bought the human equation because of the unbelievable list of guest vocalists. i figured an album with mikael akerfeldt, devon graves, james labrie, mike baker, and devin townsend couldn't be bad.

i was right, it was well worth it. i really enjoy all the different instruments arjen uses. something about those flutes and whistles in a metal album does it for me.

i don't have any of his other stuff though.

I ain't never heard none, but I've been looking to investigate the Human Equation.

my personal favorite is the two Universal Migrator albums (The Flight of the Migrator and The Dream Sequencer. These include such guests as:

Bruce Dickonson (Iron Maiden)
Michael Romeo (Symphony X)
Russell Allen (Symphony X)
Timo Kotipelto (Stratovarius)
Fabio Lione (Rhapsody)
Gary Wehrkamp (Shadow Gallery)
Neal Morse (Spock's Beard)

and plenty others. i highly suggst it.

there's that song with Romeo doing jaw dropping chromatics, it sounds too fake, but it's real. I forgot the title, but it's on flight of the migrator.

It's not really about the music. I'm quite astonished because it doesn't focus in the music (which is unbelievable) but it focuses in the interaction between vocals...

Pure poetry.

"The Human Equation" is one of the greatest albums of all time, IMO. I discovered/got into SOOOO many bands through that one...(Elfonia, Mostly Autumn, Dead Soul Tribe among others). Some of the older albums went a bit overboard on the cheese side, though (*recalls the "blues" number on Electric Castle.* :upset: ). Either way, Arjen is a fantastic musician and producer, and Ayreon as a whole rocks.

PS Arjen has a new group feat. Marcela Bovio ("wife" from The Human Equation) called "Stream of Passion." Definitely worth checking out...some cool stuff.

Crap, I was about to make a thread on these guys. They are a really good band. I only have 5 songs from the Dream Sequencer, and I love them to death, but I should buy some of their albums.

I have the Human Equation and its one of my favorite albums. I've seen Universal Migrator in stores a few times so maybe I'll get it. The guest list on that looks pretty sweet (as always)

i think you're talking about the track "Dawn of a Million Souls". It has Russell Allen as well.

I did a thread on Ayreon a while ago...didn't last too long. :p

Ayreon is amazing. Into The Electric Castle is one of the greatest concept albums I've ever heard...it seamlessly blends a whole range of styles, and the vocal/musical performances are top notch. Highly recommended.

I also have The Human Equation, which I STILL have not listened to...

As Det said, check out Stream Of Passion as well. Bovio is one of the greatest singers you'll ever hear.

Electric Castle is a little cheesy in some parts, though...esp. the lyrics. LISTEN TO THE HUMAN EQUATION! Damn, man!

I have The Human Equation, and I do enjoy it, but the lyrics are incredibly lame at times.

That's my only complaint with the album. I like it less as time goes by, but it's still good.

The lyrics were written by one person only or is it... original content by each singer?

If so, it makes sense, though: If it was one person, it's bearable: Everyone gets the writer's block and you write blabber. If it was a multi-writers thing, it's also explainable: Someone isn't that much of a songwriter.

I really have to get a hold of the full album, though.

Oh, no...not at all. There are solos and a good deal of musical prowess, but not like that. The band is progressive more in the vein of King Crimson and Pink Floyd.

All were written by Arjen except for Devin Townsend's parts. Looking at the lyrics, Devin should've had a much greater role in the lyrics department. Vague as they are, they blow Arjen's away.

The lyrics are bloody awful, but not tasteless. The rest of the Human Equation is flawless to my ears. It blows Arjen's recent project "stream of passion" out of the water.

Um... Don't diss Dream Theater.

Yea, I love Ayreon, I have Into the Electric Castle and The Human Equation. I like it how the lyrics are so straightforward on The Human Equation, so that I can understand them (instead of ridiculous poetic BS that so many other bands spout out). I don't like Devin's lyrics though. But hay, this is just me, I'm not really into lyrics and vocals anyway, so other people might like more complicated lyrics.

Anyway who cares, Ayreon's music is so awesome... I guess having it all written by one person is why it fits so well together (-: and a good balance of being heavy and light. Definitely a must-check-out 'band'.

I came very close to buying The Human Equation a while back but decided against it. Fortunetly, my Best Buy has almost their entire discography, so if I like the one I get in teh DU, I'll buy the others.

I managed to get through some of The Human Equation last night...made it to Track 6 before falling asleep.

Pain is a great track, with a funny moment...it's all soft, as I was falling asleep, and then Townsend came in and woke me up again.

Track 4 I really liked as well (I think it was track 4), the one with the call and response between Bovio and the other guy.

me too. I used to like UM much more that HE but when recently listening to it I found that I like human Equation better. You really have to listen to their albums a couple times to get into them

i recently got The Final Experiment but I haven't given it a good listen. I'll post my thoughts

I looooove Ayreon. Got into him with The Human Equation, then bought Universal Migrator. I think HE is one of the best metal albums ever made, but I find myself listening to UM Disc 2 a lot more. So cheesy, but so damn good. It's funny... I play space-themed games from time to time (EVE, X3) and almost all of the songs on Flight of the Migrator somehow fit the games perfectly.

Star One is pretty cool too :D

On somewhat related news...

Marcela Bovio's main band, Elfonia, released a new album today. My signed copy of the album also coincidentally arrived today as promised, and let me tell you: this is some amazing stuff. I really can't think of anything remotely like it...it's very jazz/fusion orientated, yet with alot of progressive atmospheres and Bovio's trademark vocal style. The closest thing that I can think of would be early Aghora (with the Seans), but even that is a stretch.

Definitely a release worth checking out.

Here are a few tracks from it:
