to be competely honest, I dont have much Santana stuff, my collection must amount to about 8 songs and I don't even have an album, but they (him) deserve a thread. This is my take on Santana:
They are a band based around lead guitarist, name of Carlos Santana. Formed in 1966. If you haven't heard of him then you should have, he's one the best guitarists ever to grace a fretboard. He has one of the most distinctive guitar styles in the world. The band play hard rock with a latin flavour, you'll often hear african drums and other percussion instuments of that sort, and the melodies are latin tinged. Many of their songs are instrumentals, but some do feature singing. I don't thimk Carlos Santana actually influences many of he song but with his skill he can just play a long. They have realeased some albums recently with many guest star appeaing.
I can give you a bio from somebody who knows a lot more than me if you want, or you could find one. Have fun discussing.

Santana's percussion section is awesome. And he's an amazing guitarist. The only album of his I own is Supernatural which is pretty recent but doesn't compare to his older stuff that i've heard. His first 3 albums are supposed to be his best so I'm going to pick one of them up soon.
The band play hard rock with a latin flavour,
They rarely play 'hard rock'
Santana is great though, he does deserve a thread.....not that it will last though.

Add a 9th to the pentatonic scale and voila, Carlos Santana! To be fair, I like the guy's music but I can only take it in small doses.
i have Santana - At their best Vols I and II, and it's pretty good, i love the jams he does with his band.
didn't he just sack his keyboardist or someone for not being "spiritual" enough?

i'll take your word for it, i don't understand scales etc :p

I could listen to his guitar tone all day. He really has mastered his distinctive sound. His band also is amazing. If you haven't seen his performance at Woodstock, you're really missing out. It was definitely a highlight of the whole concert.

I'm playing "She's not there" for the high school musical this weekend and I must say its a great track with some catchy bass lines and a great solo.
I'm not much for Santana's current work ethic of lets find all the pop stars i can and cram them into an album, and some of his earlier stuff just sounds like Latin Jazz which I'm not particularly fond of.
but overall yeah I'd say he one cool cat.

Man i watched his performance on the woodstock dvd and it blew me away.
The percussion is mind blowing especially the kid behind the drumkit.
I love all his work, especially Moon Flower which was one of his first albums.

I saw Santana this September, great show.
They've always had great drummers too, from Mike Shrieve to Dennis Chambers. Chambers was great at the show I went to, almost as fun to watch as Carlos.

I saw Santana with Robert Randolph opening. Great show although Robert stole the show. He played too much of his new hits but the ending of the show was just fantastic. Best part was when Robert and Carlos got up on stage and played a John Lee Hooker cover of "Boom Boom". Great show... :D

I liked his song he did with that vocalist of matchbox20 I think it's called smooth. Although he should just find one vocalist instead of getting bigger and bigger pop stars to do vocals for his songs.

Which scale does Santana use most frequently? I've always thought the Dorian, but could it be the Phrygian? Not just the natural minor?

I think he's pretty cool. I like the mix of latin with rock with a little bit of jazz thrown in. Such a cool combination.

Hey how about you stop dissecting every little aspect of the music and give credit where credit is due?
He makes for good easy listening and is quite an exceptional guitar play. Europa and Samba PaTi are my two favourite Santa Songs.
I've been hearing a lot about this new collaboration album of his but haven't actually checked it out. I know he did a song with Hammett for it, I think he did one with Buddy Guy as well but I'm not sure.

I give credit to where credit is due, but I also find it very interesting to study how songs are built - and what makes them sound the way they do.
From what I remember, Europa is an incredible song. Great spirit. Also, Smooth is a good one, isn't it?

I haven't really heard any of his songs. But on the radio I heard some pop song with a girl singing, but I listened just because the guitar in the song sounded very awesome. Turns out it was Santana featuring Michelle Branch.

Has anyone noticed how he only really uses three finger's when improvising and pretty much most of his soloing?

The best Santana song is soul sacrafice performed at woodstock. It's got so much soul, there's like 2 guys on bongos. The drummer has like a 10 minute solo, and it's really mindblowing. Not to mention he is playing an sg my guitar of choice not prs.
