Hello MX. I noticed that no one has made a thread about Sludge Metal.
SOUND- Slow, downtuned, bone shattering guitar riffs, often with alot of feedback. I would concider it some of the heaviest music available, and is almost a combonation of Stoner and Doom metal. There is also alot of cool breakdowns in Sludge. Breakdowns are so heavy that they sound like a tsunami of hammers.
BANDS- A majority of sludge bands came from the New Orleans area. Some of them include: Crowbar, Acid Bath, Eyehategod, Suplecs, and Down
To get a good feel of the Sludge sound, download the following tracks to start out on. I can't upload anything cause this computer sucks, so I'm sorry, but I can recomend some songs by the artists mentioned above:
1) Crowbar- "I Feel the Burning Sun"
2) Crowbar- "December Spawn"
3) Crowbar- "Planets Collide"
4) Acid Bath- "Cassie Eats Cockroaches"
5) Acid Bath- "Bleed Me An Ocean"
6) Eyehategod- "Southern Discomfort"
7) Eyehategod- "30 Dollar Bag"
8) Suplecs- "Rock Bottom"
9) Down- "Bury Me In Smoke"
Listen to those songs and let me know what you think. Feel free to discuss these bands and bands I didn't mention.

Sludge Metal = extremely awesome.

COC - Corrosion of Conformity tops this genre IMO. Crowbar and Down are really my only other commonly listened to Sludge bands.

Iniquity? Unless it's a different Iniquity then what's on my mind, I don't believe they're Sludge.

I wouldn't really concider them sludge. They are too upbeat. Sludge is alot slower and depressing.

Alabama Thunderp**** isn't Sludge. I've never heard Clearlight, but Jimmy Bower, one of the kings of Sludge, is in it. From what I've read about them, I would love them.

I have a Sun O))) album, and it has to be the most boring album I have ever heard. They guitar is just noise, no rythym or anything for about 10 minutes for each song. I think that they are sludge metal, I downloaded it from somewhere, and when I put it on my computer the genre said Sludge/Doom Metal.

Sludge metal is just Southern-Rock and stoner-influenced metal...Acid Bath and Down are two of my favorites...and if you put Down in that catergory you might as well put COC in there as well.
Eyehategod and Crowbar deserve more recognition than they get.

Iniquity is sludge/death, their later work is more deathtastic.

I'm going to see them in month:D
yeah and to the guy who thought Sunn0))) was very boring it's something you either abosolutely hate or love to death. It's prefect for playing late at night after a couple beers etc
EDIT: some of the early Isis stuff is sludgey

Check out a band called Teeth Of Lions Rule The Divine. one song = 30 minutes, most of it beautiful beautiful feedback and noise. Also, a band called Roanoke with an EP called Stormbringer, you can find them on myspace. I dont have the link for it, but I know they're on there. As for Teeth of Lions, i dont know where you'd find that one. But if you do find anything by them, check it out.

I find the band Down to be the ultimate Sludge Metal band, most of the members of EyeHateGod and Crowbar used to play in Down.

eh nope, Sabbath were just this litte bluesy jazzy band before Iommi started writing amazing riffs. Earth aren't that old but some of Sabbaths stuff could be though of as early sludge/doom e.g. Into The Void.

Well, people keep telling me the whole Doom genre is based around Sabbaths first album, so are hailed as the fathers of doom. Im sure Earth was their name before aswell, but obviously you're thinking someone else!

Well, this thread has been done before, but alright:
Apart from the obvious ones, such as Down, COC, Crowbar, check out Alabama Thunderpussy, Devil To Pay, Karma To Burn and Monster Magnet, and don't forget sludge's close cousin stoner rock.
In fact, just check out http://www.stonerrock.com, they've got a multitude of both genres
So what is the real difference between Stoner rock and Sludge metal. I love stoner bands like Kyuss, Nebula and Fu Manchu...

Down was mostly sludge sounding on their first album. Most of the riffs sounded like Kirk from Crowbar wrote them. Former Crowbar bass player Todd Strange was also on that album. Down 2 is more Southern Rock influenced. They replaced Todd with Rex Brown and it sounds more like COC than Crowbar. Their next album is supposed to be incredibly angry according to Jimmy Bower(drums).

yes, completely different band.
Sunn 0))), Boris, Earth, ect are Drone metal. It really is a love/hate kinda thing, but I think its fantastic. I always considered bands like Isis and Jesu (and Pelican to some extent) Sludge Metal. I haven't been able to find anything by eyehategod, ect. If someone could provide some uploads, I'd appreciate it.

Neither are, though AIC did have a few sludge songs on their last studio album.
Also worth checking out is White Zombie's "La Sexorcisto", as its full of lovely sludge elements

According to Jimmy Bower. I'm geussing he's talked to everyone. He said Kirk stayed in New Orleans when the hurricane hit, Phil's house isn't damaged, Jimmy and Pepper live with their families together in a trailer around Lake Charles. He didn't say anything about Rex, but I geuss they have talked about doing another album.

Jesus, could you be any more wrong?
Doom+Hardcore punk=Sludge.
That being said, Me favorite sludge bands are Acid Bath and The Melvins.
The Melvin invented sludge and they have Buzz Osbourne, who makes any band better. And Acid Bath was one of the more diverse bands from this genre. Dax Riggs vocals=sex.
