View Full Version : Zildjian Mystery Ride

I just picked up a Zildgian Ride from a pawn shop, but I have no idea as to what kind it is. It has the Avedis stamp on the top and the hollow Zildjian logo on the bottom side. So it's fairly old. It has no lathing rings like the A's do though, it's totally smooth. It's heavy as ****, thicker and heavier than most Z customs. My best guess is that it's an earth ride, but I am not sure how long those have been around and from the pictures I have seen, it looks they are not totally smooth like this one is aside from the rampant tarnishing. I picked it up along with a 14" AAX studio crash in great shape, $35 for the both of them. So it was a good deal whatever it is. Any ideas?

If there is a number visible somewhere on the cymbal, i'm sure you call up Zildjian and they'll tell you what is by the number(unless it's worn off) then you're stuck...

Hey, nice find man! I check the pawn shops periodically for stuff, but I've never found cymbals. I'd love to see a pic. I'm sure someone can ID it once we see it.

Sure sounds like an Earth ride by the description you gave. Extremely heavy, no lathing, and very tarnished? I'd bet a fair amount that it's an Earth ride. Combine that with the 14" AAX for $35 bucks? That's insane  What a deal :amaze:

OK, upon further inspection it turns out that it is in fact, an Earth ride. It has a clearly defined medium-deep ping with little yet unusual overtones. I used it at my band's rehearsal tonight and my band said the overtones sounded like a background string arrangement (?)(!) This thing is the heaviest ride I have ever seen, it weighs like 20 pounds! I have a few questions, answers wil be rewarded.
1) What year did Zildjian stop using the hollow logo? This ride has it, so I know it is fairly old.
2) Will polishing this cymbal ruin/change it's trademark sound? Some douche at the pawn shop wrote the price on the cymbal with a sharpie marker.
3) What can I use to get the sticker tag residue off the studio crash without messing up the finish?

These are pawn shop stickers. They are a force to be reckoned with. I'll try the soap and water though.
I'll post pics when I get home from work today. Also, what about polishing the Earth Ride? Will it effect the sound? I know they come rather "raw" looking, but I just really want to get that freakin' marker off of there.

i wouldnt clean it. Just play on that area that has sharpie with wooden tipped sticks and it will come off.
As for the polishing, the only polishing i would do would be with a lcoth and nothing else, just rub it clean.

You can polish it, it's not going to change the look.

Dish soap or bar soap?
just any regular soap you use to wash your hands or dish soap works. you really dont need to put too much soap though. just a little bit will do enough.

If you use groove juice, you'll most likely lose whats left of the logo. Also if the cymbal becomes brighter, the tone will change slightly. But prolly not enough for most to notice.

Well, I plan on just polishing the top. I think the ride could benefit from a slightly brighter tone, so I was actually kind of hoping that is what would happen.

I wouldn't clean it man. Cymbals sound lots better dirty.

^Dirty with stick residue, not dirty with gross black soot, which is what I've found most Earth rides to be covered in :p.
