i need to write an information essay on the drums. i need any ideas you guys can give me. i'm suffering from writers block right now. i have to assume the targeted audience knows very little about drums, and i need to find a way to make it interesting.

there needs to be about three or four main points. i was thinking about discussing the standard five piece set up, then the common woods, and possibly cymbals if i write it about drumkits.

another idea would be the importance of the drums in music, but i don't know how to make at least three strong points on that.

i'm not asking anyone to write this for me, i just need some ideas on how to write an interesting essay for an audience that knows nothing.

please help a fellow mx-ian. ALL ideas will be appreciated.

sizes of drums, heads, what each drum does/what it's main purpose is.

other than that, you can talk about polyrhythms, different styles (rock follows quarter notes, latin follows clave), syncopation, all that stuff.

different techniques and the advantages/disadvantages.

the greats, and what they've done to advance drumming as a whole.

different concepts that go into creating a drum part for a song.

or, i forgot this... terminology. explain what a diddle, ghost note, rudiments, rimshot, rim click, etc. is/are.

if I could do it the I would probably do something like how the drumset has changed over the years, and how it came to be. Sorta like a history of the drumset. I know they used to have a little attachment to a bass pedal to hit a little cymbal attached to a bass drum, look at kits now.
So for points you could use somethin like:

-How the drumset came about (who, what, when, where, how)

-The first drumset ever made, description of just about each important piece

-Drumsets today and how they have greatly changed from the drumsets of WWI (when the first was made)

Good luck with your essay and whatever you write will most likely be good :thumb:

my guess would be that drums were the first musical instruments ever made because they are easy to construct and the physics involved in them are simple.

You know what...if you owned the Steve Smith Dvd "Drumset Technique/History of the U.S Beat" you could write an excellent paper. He goes from slavery all the way to modern music today. Thats A LOT of info.
