View Full Version : unusual question to earplug users. IMPORTANT

i must ask.
i just sat down on my drumkit, about to play, i put in my earplugs, and i felt that it was a bit tight in one ear, it felt like i had put it in a bit quickly, and hadn't allowed the pressure to escape, it wasnt that i had made contact with the plug, and a sensitive part of my ear, it was that i had a buld-up of presure, so anyway.
i disregarded it, and sat down and played about 4 bars( 30 seconds maybe?). until i felt the taste of blood in my mouth, so i stopped playing, and took out the plug, and saw it had blood on it.
i got a tissue, and put it in my ear, and washed the plug, and threw it out.

But i was wondering if this has happened to anyone else before?

Might i also add in some background informatrion, ive been playing for about a year, and at first i didnt use ear protection, but i have started to recently. However i do think the 6months i played without ear protection has affected my hearing, and im due in for an ear appointment in two weeks. Ive also had sore throat/ears/ and the passages connecting them, for a few days prior.

Has this happened to anyone else?
Any Advice?

Wow, that has never happened to me. You might want to have a doctor look into that man, unless it's some waxy gross scab peeling off in your ear (gross), then i can't imagine blood coming from your ear being healthy.

You need to see a doctor immediately!

I'm not sure what's wrong, but a if you could taste blood in your mouth AND had it on the outside of the ear..

I hope for yousake it's not, but it sounds like you have caused a ruptured ear drum.

Seek IMMEDIATE medical attention. Perhaps even go to the ER tonight.

Blood from the ears is a VERY bad sign. Tell your parents, have them take you to a doctor or hospital.

I can not stress enough - Go To A Doctor Now.

the only real advice i think anyone is gonna tell you is just to see a doctor right away. you say you have an appointment in 2 weeks but id say go for an emergency one right now. bleeding from the ears is NOT good.

You REALLY need to go to the Emergancy Room.

As I'm sitting here thinking about it.. I just can't imagine how you are even spending the time to ask about it on a internet forum.

This is a SERIOUS issue. ANy rupture of the ear is BAD. Bleeding from the ear is VERY BAD. In two week you could develope an infection inside your brain dude... this ain't no friggin joke.

Go to a doctor NOW!

Yeah man, You should really this thing checked out. this could be a very serious problem now and even more serious in the future. Go to a doctor ASAP or go seek some sort of medical attention.

I have never heard of this thing ever happening, ever. I suggest in the future that you should invest in some ear muffs, you know the ones that industrial workers use. i use them and i find them really good. they could save your ears.

nonsense!

I hope to god you haven't replied to this because you went and got medical attention.

Those are what i use when practicin.

Well from a biology stand point, your ears are connected to your nose and throat. So any blood must have come from deep inside the ear which definately points to a ruptured eardrum. If you dont get this sorted you may never be able to hear properly again.

yeah, ears are connected to the nose and mouth. Pressure is definitely a consideration with earplugs. On mine, they say specifically to be careful taking them out, as taking them out too quickly could create a suction effect and **** you up

sounds like everybody says you should be concerned. doesnt hurt to get it checked out.

There is no way with what the threadstarter described the injuries he sustained can NOT be serious.

Hence the immediate and urgent concern that he seek medical attention.

Yep go to the ER for sure, I've ruptured an eardrum swimming (used to be on a dive team) and it never healed, I then had to have surgery on it this sept 21. But everything is good, you dont want to let it get infected so go to the doc/Er and get some meds.

My guitarist had a similar problem, theres something with his ears and he can't wear regular ear plugs. He had special ones made, kind of expensive but well worh keeping you hearing. Go to the doctor or a hearing centre and get it check out.

Just reading this thread made me check my ears to make sure they're not bleeding for some reason.

Now I'm going to be all hypochondrial about it.

Man that is really BAD. Normally heavily bleeding from the ears results into death. So i would say ( like other did ) go to ER ASAP.
And to all drummers reading this , ALWAYS be very carefull when playing drums.
It doesn't seem to be extremly loud , but it does effect your hearing.

Can anyone else hear bells?

I would seriously consider getting custom fitted ear plugs regardless :) Its on my list of purchases

Damn...I wish you the best of luck. I hope you won't get an injury that will last forever (eardamage or something like that).

Please go to ER, if you aren't there already.

i've never tasted blood, but over hte summer i received an injury in my ear where ear fluid was coming out of my ear and i could feel it going down my throat. Went to four different doctors, four different suggestions of what was wrong, for different medicines and i'm still deaf in the left ear:upset: hopefully you fair better than i did. But yeah, go to a doctor and see if he can help you any

Just a reminder to everyone: if you've got the kind of ear plugs that you put IN your ear, then follow the directions on the package. You shouldn't just be cramming the plugs in your ears. Make sure that you squish/roll up the plug so that it's skinny and gently place it in your ear canal (not too far). The plug will then slowly expand in the ear canal, gently closing off the ear and eliminating the chance of a sudden pressure differential due to compressing too much air into your ear at once.

I hate the pressure in your ear. I can't even play with it. I use in ear headphones, which do pretty well at keeping my ears protected. Each of them (the headphones) has a very very small hole in it that prevents pressure i guess, but sometimes it gets blocked by wax or something, and it annoys the hell out of me.

I'm not very knowledgable in the auditory field (or in any other medical field for that matter), but that sounds to me like a perforated ear drum. That is different from a ruptured ear drum. From what I know, ruptured ear drums hurt badly, and since you didn't mention pain in the ear (although I'm sure there was some), it sounds more like a perforation. Either way, that's bad. See a doctor.

When I got my scuba ceritfication, the instructor told me about how he perforated his ear drum once. Treatment involved things like wearing a cover over the ear when in the shower, stuff for pain, etc.

Im quite worried now cos I always cram my ear plugs in and sometimes when i play with headphones on the top they get pushed in quite far. But I don't really get pain from it or anything. Hmm.

stoned_rat
11-02-2005, 06:09 AM
24 hours after, i didnt go to ER, it wasnt that kind of a bleeding, it wasnt a constant flow, or even from the middle ear, im quite sure it was just blood from the sides of the ear, quite possibly a scab or whatnot. That being said, my ear appt is in 5days, and im not really going to worry about it until then, however i will obviously mention it to the doctor once i am there.
i think im gonna give heavy duty drumming a break for a week or so anyway, ive got a ton of school work, and i need to practice my rudiments anyway.
Im also going to look into new forms of ear protection, quite possibly getting construction headphones, and not crappy earplugs.

Drum Phil
11-02-2005, 06:11 AM
You're an idiot. If the blood went to your mouth its coming from inside the ear!

stoned_rat
11-02-2005, 06:24 AM
there was no blood in my mouth.
have you never felt the taste of blood in your mouth?
Even when you walk into a pole or whatever, and you bash your forehead, and there is no blood, and there is still that taste of blood?
never had that? regardless, im not stupid, i didnt need ER, it wasnt that sort of situation. it was NOT a constant flow of blood, it was a minute amount. added to that, the only way that tiny plastic earplugs could cause serious damage(without serious pre-existing damage) is if they are at the very least, forcefully pushed into the ear with the intent of damage.
Once again, I'm not an idiot, if i required urgent medical attention i would've gone to the hospital immediately.

Edit: there was also no pain, the only pain i felt was at the very begginning as they were inserted when i felt the pressure rise. once they were out i felt no pain..... and i can imagine a ruptured/perforated ear drum hurting quite a lot.

I don't know, if it were me would have gone to the hosipital the second it happend. The one of the most important things to musicians, let alone a drummer, are his/her ears. Hope the ear appointment goes good.

Why did you ask a question if you already knew there was nothing serious?

Why make a thread if you won't use the opinions you get?

Better to be safe than sorry. I think you're making a mistake.

Yes, but that didn't happen to you all at once, from something that you knew would cause a problem.

That sucks though, I had ear infections all the time when I was little, hated that.

OH yea that makes sense. Tell me.. where does the blood come from? It has to come out of the skin in some way, an opening, rupture, cut. It's pretty rare for blood to come out of pores.

To the threadstarter. You arent' a doctor and are making rather rash, uninformed choices. Swallow your pride and go have it looked at. You aren't qualified to say if it is, isn't or could be a problem. Or could be an indication of a growing problem. etc

ANY amount of blood out of ears = nothing good.
