ive been thinking about buying a new main (14", preferably) snare drum. i have about $300 to spend. i want something thats got a lot of crack, and a 'decent' amount of ring.
ive been looking at pearl freefloating maple, piglite (pork pie), pearl sensitone brass, ... any suggestions, those are just a few types that i really like.

I've heard good things about Chad Smith Signatures, they are steel, so probably have a nice amount of ring, and are a versatile size that I don't doubt you could get some nice crack out of.

I wish I had the money to buy a new snare drum, mine is terrible. But nice ones are so expensive and I need the money for my car payments. :(

Tama 5.5X14" Artwood. Get that and you'll have money left over to go buy a Coated G1 and Hazy 200 to replace the stock heads and then you'll be ready to rock :thumb:

"This bronze panther adds character to any location. Great for home or garden. Made from the lost wax casting method, it measures approx. 25"x48"x20". Terrific gift idea with the holidays quickly approaching. Includes free shipping."

Long & Mcquade gave me that quote for the one I'm looking at ordering with my kit when I round up some funds.
Stay away from anything "signature". You'll be paying for a name on a drum.
Look into custom stuff. Conaway has a grip of snares at or under that price range.

he can put my signature on the snare too, which is sexy... yes you have a point, im going to get a quote from him sometime soon.

conaway brass snare drums... he has some polished and unpolished, any difference in sound? the polished are prettier... anyone ever seen a metal shell with vents?

Vents remove some of the body so i dont like them :)

So, you do want to shatter your eardrums. It'd be crazy loud, man.

Yes. Most all snare drums in general have some vent on them of some kind. The exception to my knowledge is Dunnett.
Not much of a difference in sound for the outside of the finish. Polished or unpolished on the inside will make a difference though.
If you are refearing to extra venting, ala "OCDP Style" - Be prepared for an incredibly loud snare.
Say you weant with a 14x6 with 4 1.25" vents in a brass. You'd be able to breath on it and get a sound. Every little thing will be more prounouced and noticable.
You won't really loose that much tone as you aren't taking away that much of the shell. You'll be basically altering the pyhsics of the air movement inside the drum, wich consequently results in a different sound. In this case, it'll effectively dry the sound out.

Not at all. I'd suggest playing on as many snare drums as you can to get an idea of what different materials, sizes and possibly vents would sound like.
Guitar Center's useally have 30 or so snare drums lying about. Not to mention any drum shop near by.
If you are planning on junking your current snare, you could vent that to see how things sound. Start with smaller ones and make them bigger to give you a very good idea of the effect of venting.
You could also just kidna split the difference so to speak and order your brass snare with 4 normal air vents. Something a lil different, but not so extreme as the larger style. You could even do 10 say, one between each lug. That would be 10x the venting on a normal snare. Wouldn't cost much at all over the base price too.
It's custom, be creative.

Order a non-vented snare. Then, If you -must- make it dryer/louder, have it vented.

im not getting rid of my current main...
what snare on conaways site would you think creates the least ring-age?
Not a metal snare unless it's heavily vented.
Metal snares have the most amount of overtones.
It thus follows that the harder the wood, the more "ringing".
If you want a very dry snare, just have it vented. Four 1" vents on a 5" deep, 1.25" on a 6" deep, etc..

i think ive decided... i want something thats "holy ****" loud, with lots of response, lots of pop/crack, little-medium overtones, and it looks pretty.
black nickel plated brass - 6.5 x 14 w/ (4) 1.5" vents
(20) 50% offset tube lugs (single sided)*
diecast hoops*
black trick (or nickel) strainer(and butt)
everything w/ *'s is going to be powdercoated... probably red to match my kits sparkle finish..
i want a sound like this... http://www.indoorstorm.com/product_info.php?products_id=2746
"Play an MP3 of this Snare!!" <-that with a tad bit more ring.

if you want it to sound like that, getting brass isnt going to come close. maple is much warmer than brass. less ring naturally.

11-01-2005, 05:19 PM
well, im going for something origional sounding, it can have some ring, i just dont want it to be a ****ty ring (my first steel snare was a pearl forum... and its all i have to judge metal shells by)
also, im not looking for much warmth... i just want a nice crack with a 'good' amount of ring, and something that looks/feels like my own custom creation.
I'd ditch the Die-Cast hoops.
That kind of snare is going to be so dry to begin with throwing die-casts on there is only going to make it worse.

lol, u worry me when u say its going to be 'so' dry... im going to have to do some research...
maybe a 6.5x14 same thing with no vents and reinforcement rings(higher pitch) is what im looking for...

I can't believe that no one's suggested a Yamaha 13" Musashi Oak Snare. I know that you're looking for a 14" snare, but this thing cracks and it's loud as hell. It's also cheap ($230 from MF I think). I'm gonna' get one as soon as I save some dough.
Also, you might consider a 14" Tama Maple Starclassic. It's a little over your budget ($390, I think) but it's a really nice snare.

funny thing is he did try to sell me one... i had his aim s.n. and all of that jazz.. was gonna be a stave shell with a curly maple veneer... o well, ive got my wooden shell, going for a metal shell... then a full acrylic set. heh.
i think ill jus get the snare, but with no vents, see how i like it, if i want a change, get someone to cut it for me. heh.
