aww man, I was gonna say B8 lol, but ya, it is probably the best beginner ride, alot of experienced drummers on here still like the sound, I know I do lol

In my opinion, the best thing is to buy the cheapest cymabls possible that will last him and start saving for professional cymbals over a period of a year or 2(by which time his technique should be better and therefore less chance of him damaging more expensive cymbals)

That's what I did, I went from Paiste 101s to K customs/sigs/HHX and I saved money by not buying intermediate cymbals.

B8pro rides.

Sound great and are cheap.

Paiste PST 5 are also worth looking at.

I haven't tried it myself, but the sound samples at paistes' site of the 22" rock ride sound pretty sweet! I got the Sabian 20" B8 Ride though, and it's an OK cymbal, great for the price, but rather tinny sounding (IMO .... and I think tinny is the correct adjective :p )

I actually like the sound of the b8 ride, better than the b8 pro. Also, it has a bigger bell. They're both good rides, try them both out, and see what you like.

I would recommend a 20" ZBT for beginners.

I would recommend a 20" ZBT for beginners.

bleagh! i have one of those and i hate it. i bought a decent ride cymbal a few months ago. our kid is probably better off with a B8 pro or similar.
