Basically, list what basses you think are used popularily in certain genres. I saw something similar in the guitar forum, and thought it'd be interesting to do for basses.

Prog - Rickenbacker
Metal - Warwick
Classic Rock - Fender
Funk - Music Man
Hair Metal - B.C. Rich

I'm sure you guys get the idea. Amps and, I suppose, effects are acceptable as well.

The only prog bassist I can think of that uses ERBs is Myung.

I have :) It sounds better than you would think. It's a pretty cool contrast. Warwick + saxophone = awesome.

I dont like to classify like this, but Kubicki and Fodera are what Id consider Virtuoso basses. They are a look and tone I commonly assosciate with Virtuoso players.

Rickenbacker 4003 i would definetly associate with indie, loads of bands use it, Razorlight, Franz Ferdinand, The kaiser chiefs...they're all the same.

About four of the bassists of my favourite experimental Japanese groups use Hohner B2's.. Which aren't that common.

Weird?

Except that it, with the exception of the saxophone, was probably the most boring song I've ever heard. The bassist plays two different notes all the song. As far from jazz as you can possibly come.

No. Every instrument has it's own natural tone that can in no way be replicated with effects.

Listen to Gerald Veasley playing jazz on his SR3006 and try and tell me you can't do jazz with an Ibanez ;)
