View Full Version : So I wanna start using a single SM57 to record my drums and guitar, what else to buy?

i just want to be able to post some semi-decent clips online and maybe fool around with GarageBand.

i'd be only recording one instrument at a time, meaing my guitar or the WHOLE drumset

what are the cheapest things i can get to be able to put my music on the computer with a SM57 but without recording directly to my comp (since i don't have a laptop and my drums are in the garage)

i'd need the mic, a mic cable, and then some type of tape recorder? is that it?

You'll also need a mixer or an adapter of some sort for the mic. I'd recommend a mixer.

You want to record onto something other than your computer? Cheapest thing you'll find is a minidisc recorder, after which you'll need a preamp such as the mic200 or a mixer. You'll also need an xlr cable and one to connect the mixer/pre to the minidisc.

let's say all i wanna do is record my guitar directly to my computer...

would this be feasable?

SM57 --> XLR to 1/8 ---> iMic (preampm, 1/8 to USB) ---> Computer

NONONONONONO it wouldn't! People, don't believe Moaner's pixie story, no one will convert a mic signal to a line signal for you if you don't use something to convert it.

Your options:

1. Buy a preamp and connect the mic to it with an xlr cable, then run a line level signal from the mpreamp to the imic. eg mic100

2. Buy a small mixer and connect as above. eg behringer UB series

3. Buy an interface with preamps instead of the imic. Having said that, i Mic is what I use and is perfectly fine.
