If you were going to record to your computer... what kind of cable/connector would you ned to go from the line out on an amp to the computer? And where might I purchase one?

1/4"-1/8" converter. Here they are exactly $4.32 at radioshack. If you have an XLR for your DI, you'll most likely need to go through a mixer and then do the same thing anyway.

a 1/4" to 1/8" restricter. thats pretty much it. you can get them at any radioshack or pretty much any DIY store.

Yup. What they said. Or you can put a mic next to your amp when you play.

OK since I'm a computer idiot, then what? do you have to have a recording program or something? i need to figure this out so i can get in some comps.

Yes, you need a recording program unless you want to use Windows Sound Recorder; but if you do that the quality will be so bad that no one will vote for you anyway.

From what I've heard, audacity is the best free software out there. Hopefully someone will link you to it.

my long term goal is to be able to edit my bands recordings too. maybe i should just buy cakewalk or something like that?

If you have that much money, go ahead. Cakewalk is an excellent program.

So with the 1/4" - 1/8" convertor... will it just plug into the microphone jack on my computer?

since you're asking this im guessing you dont, but if you have a breakout box for your sound card (i.e. creative audigy or audigy 2 platinum series) you would already have a 1/4" jack input on the box, so you can record straight from your bass. i have an audigy 2 platinum so i can pretty much plug in my bass and record without anything inbetween

Likewise, it's fairly awesome. Though I think it's a bit better for playback than recording. It keeps everything from really distorting, but there could be a bit more depth to it. Of course, my mixing and engineering skills aren't the greatest.

this is a little off topic, but if youve recorded something, what sites can you upload it onto?

yea, well, if youre thinking about playback, you need some descent speakers to handle all the low frequencies of the bass to make it clean, so the best input wouldnt matter if youre listening to it on junk speakers

doodooking: I have a set of Altec Lansing speakers that are fairly high quality. I think it records well, sure, but there's just stuff out there more suited for the purpose.

since i live with two other people who use the computer a lot during the day i have an digital 8 track recorder but i may try the computer thing one day! It sounds to me that the computer can do the exact same thing as my recorder. I can record my music on a soundcard and upload it into the computer.
