Defretting is when you take a fretted bass (one with frets) and remove them (defretting) to make your bass fretless...
You defret by heating up your frets with a soldering iron so the glue is weakened then you remove them with pliers.

so my guitarist is getting his guitar defretted, but not so its fretless. is there any other reason for defretting?

Mabye if there is wear on the frets and they need to be replaced.
