wow this is the first time i've visited this forum. y is it that there are threads like stoner rock which could go to the rock and metal forums, and aint ska part of the alternative forums? oh and i'm surprised there aint no pop threads around, i guess times have changed.
ok anyway there are so many genres out there and i'm not going to stick to rock and metal all my life. i've recently been interested in rock/ambient sound eg. palm muted delay and reverb effect, i dont know whether i'm correct in classifying bands like dredg under that genre.if i'm right, can you guys recommend me some bands..

If you like ambient, check out some of Brian Eno's stuff. Really good ambient stuff.

I don't think that you'd class Dredg as ambient.

But you should listen to EightMilesHigh and get Brian Eno anyway, his music is great.

What exactly is ambient?

Killtacular
10-30-2005, 12:13 PM
The term was first coined by Brian Eno in the late 1970s to refer to music that would envelop the listener without drawing attention to itself, that can be either "actively listened to with attention or as easily ignored, depending on the choice of the listener".

S'kood.
Get Music for Airports.
Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works are also good, with 85-92 being more electronica and Vol. II being more minimalistic.

and yes, as "big" as the forum seems it's actually quite limited with regards to musical "genres" imo as well as other things, but anyways i digress

Oh if you want to know ambient...and the pioneers behind it, then this is for you:

This is my 4-hour ambient mix with over 75 tracks in it! It took a while to make...carefully edited. you can download the entire mix (220mb) called 'The Love' and/or it's 3 component parts ('The Roam', 'The Fall', 'The Rise') below it. The tracklistings are all there. Please take a listen and tell me what you think! The tracklisting is a virtual who's-who of the ambient/ambient dub/experimental sound world.

I've been wanting to do this for a long, long time...My way of paying homage to the great texture-paving pioneers and purveyors of these amazing soundscapes. I really hope you enjoy this...whether for spacing out or as a background wallpaper for your day/night...Peace!!

Dude those artworks are freakin' intense. Awesome stuff. Not sure if I can be bothered about the music...so mammoth...can you recommend one of the three parts?

Well the first one (The Roam) is mostly terrestrial/organically based and layered with nature sounds...it gets darker in the end. The Fall is all dark ambient...some gothic, some a bit spooky, and some downright disturbingly twisting sound but gets a bit positive in the end. The Rise is almost all ethereal/spacey ambient...very positive. I hope this helps. The second one is a bit dark for most ambient lovers taste, but of course the dark ambient lovers...well...they love it. lol.

I hope this helps!

As for the cue list...I should have made one after deleting the project in my Adobe Audition where I created it...oops. However, I do have cue/track uncompressed wav versions of all 3 mixes if you'd like; They sound a helluva lot better of course, and there are track marks at the appropriate tracks.

Brian Eno founded and coined "ambient music," as someone else pointed out before.

Kudos to the man who mentioned Biosphere, he is awesome. 'Silene' is a gorgeous, moody track that has many wintry connotations to it.

Um I am a newb and I started posting cause I want to hear how to get into making ambient. I played drums and a little geetar before but this electronic stuff is new for me. I spent like 8 hours searching google how to get started and it doesnt seem like anyone will give advice like its a go do it and leave us the frack alone attitude. I came up with some software like reason, reaktor, pro tools and that seemed like the top contenders. This hobby seems like at least a 1500 dollar setup or so if you have a newer computer and only need the software, midi keyboard, and the device to record external sounds. If you can give any advice I would really dig it. :chug:

Yes, Lotus Eaters! They are a project of Stephen O'Malley, from Sunn O))). I heard an mp3 from some record label's page a while ago and have been trying to find their album ever since. I dl'ed their first LP they released, "Alienist on a Pale Horse".

What style of ambient is it? If it's simply a Sunn O))) mutation, then screw that.

Is it electronica-based or more just sonic experimentation or what?

CabbageStabbage

I found a site where you can get an mp3:

Ephemerall

It's definitely not ambient of the SUNN O))) variety; it's much more minimal, having some sparse guitar here and there and strange sounds deep in the mix. Aaron Turner of Isis is also involved.
