I think that the new york dolls influenced every single punk band in the 70s but thats just my opinion. most influential band ever for me would have to be The Ramones (im not a huge fan of theirs) but when you think about how many bands say they are influenced by them (which is now the popular thing to do) you have to agree with some of them

Elvis Presley. I don't like him, but as far as I'm concerned it's true.
Mozart and Beethoven. They shaped modern music as we know it.

Will go with the Beatles or Velvet Underground

Blink 182.

A stupid response for a stupid thread. But I guess if I'd really pick an inspirational band it would have to be...

The Beatles.

They did so many things that no one had ever done and really opened the door for all of the music of today.

I agree with darrell. The Beatles pretty much reached into almost every genre of music. They have at least one song that any one person thats into a certain genre.

Your local church band. Without them the whole of the cool music I listen to would be stupid.
