Need help getting into punk

I've always been into the more bluesy rock kinda stuff (I.E. Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, Zepplin's later stuff, etc.) and old school metal (non-shred/thrash stuff like Sabbath and Iron Maiden), but it seems to me that as far as small gigs go and general audience, that stuff isn't really in high demand. So I thought to myself: "What is popular, but won't make me want to shoot myself while playing it?" and the answer I came to was Punk. So..... I'm here to ask for the names of punk bands/songs that will fit into the kind of music I play and listen to.

I also want to know the basics of playing punk music, guitar to be specific. I know NOTHING about it and whatever you guys can say to help me with that would be great too.
