I'm doing a physics project on how the pickups work in a guitar/bass, and I just need to know; what exactly does gauge measure, and what are its units if anyone knows?
Thanks

How thick the strings are.
like 1.05, 0.85, 0.65, 0.45. Its in millimetres i think

Guage measures the diameter of the wire, that is the thickness of the wire. The larger the guage the larger the current the wire can carry. I'm not sure on the units it is measured in, maybe millimetres?

He's doing it on the pickups/electronics.

Are you sure? Because the low B on my bass is 135 and its definately more than 1.35 mm in diameter. Unless its the radius?

I suppose it could be in inches...

Millimetres in Radius seems to fit. Millimetres in diameter would be far too small, and inches would be FAR too big.

All the bass strings and guitar strings that I've seen are in inches. Your diameter is .135 inches. That is a little over an 1/8 inch.
A simple google search got me this page on the first link

Gauge, in terms of wire and strings, measures the diameter (thickness) of the string or wire.

its decimal inches. .135 of an inch would be your B string.
